*MRTB, the Nigerian Physiotherapist's underutilized weapon for self actualization*
The Medical Rehabilitation Therapist (Registration) Board (MRTB) is the regulatory agency for the practice and training of medical rehabilitation professions in Nigeria. Medical rehabilitation professions under the MRTB's scope of influence include Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Prothesis and Orthosis , Clinical Audiology and Speech Therapy. Of all these professions, Physiotherapy remains the most established product of MRTB and contributes the largest percentage of her workforce. In other words, MRTB is controlled by Physiotherapists.
MRTB has the role of determining the standard of Physiotherapy practice and training in Nigeria. This means that MRTB being responsible for licensing Physiotherapy practice is supposed to be the most important factor in deciding the fate of every Physiotherapist in Nigeria. The number of Physios employed, the quality of training given to aspiring Physios and the quality/cost of services delivered in public institutions as well as in private ones are all supposed to be within the infuence of the MRTB. Unfortunately, though I stand to be corrected, the MRTB has only been effective in issuance of licence, conduction of induction and organization of conferences leaving the other aspects to suffer.
The failure of the MRTB to live up to her duties is one of the reasons Physiotherapy seems to be begging for recognition in the current health system in the country. It is no gainsaying that most Physiotherapy departments in federal and state health institutions are in sorry states with little or no space for offices not to talk of availability of equipments. These departments are grossly understaffed and the few physios around are masters in improvisation (an outstanding traits all Nigerian Physios are not duly appreciated for). In some institutions, Physios are not rightly given their place of pride among the clinical staff even when they too wear white coat and document on patient's folder in the wards.
In our institutions of learning even among the foremost ones like the one I graduated from, Physiotherapy lecturers lack individual offices and no adequate class rooms and laboratories can be classified Physiotherapy specific. In recent times, in a bid to reduce the pride of Physios and prove that Physios are inadequately trained to work independently of the Medical doctors, some medical schools (orchestrated by our sister profession who claim to be 'Lord of the health sector') have now separated the Physios from the other medical students in course like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology which before were a common class for both Physios and medical doctors in training.
In all these happenings, the MRTB is believed to always be going for accreditation exercises and deeming these conditions satisfactory for granting accreditations to these institutions. All these raise questions in my mind (I don't know if it does too in your mind); 'what are the minimum requirements in terms of equipment and staffing for granting of accreditation for the practice and training of Physiotherapy in Nigeria?' and ' Are accreditation inspections often really carried out in reality or its an 'audio thing'?'.
I am of the opinion that the MRTB is one potent channel through which the Nigerian Physios can take their fight to the powers that be. If MRTB becomes effective and strict in matters concerning accreditation of clinics and training institutions, unemployment and sidelining of the Physios can be greatly reduced. Imagine what would happen if all the Physiotherapy clinics and departments in a state loose their accreditation for poor funding, understaffing and lack of equipments?, Don't you think this can cause more attention to be paid to Physiotherapy?. Imagine what would happen to the Physiotherapy profession if the MRTB actually set up committees and fully empower them to check quackery in all states of the federation rather just posting names from Lagos without anything to empower such committees?.
I believ
e our struggle for self actualization is a good one but I think we can achieve it faster if we add the MRTB as our secret landmine to the NSP warheads.
This is just my opinion.
