PHENOXYETHANOL VS SODIUM BENZOATE: Which Preservative Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions formulators ask is:
Which preservative is better; Phenoxyethanol or Sodium Benzoate?
The best choice depends on your formulation, pH, and the type of product you're making.

In comparison:
1. pH Range
Phenoxyethanol is most active across a broad pH range (around pH 3–10), making it suitable for many cosmetic and personal care products. While Sodium Benzoate performs best in acidic formulations, (below pH 5.5).

2. Best Applications
Phenoxyethanol is Ideal for:

Sodium Benzoate
