Ijebu Ode

The history of Ojude Oba dates back to the late 19th century, over 100 years ago. According to oral history, the festival began after the spread of Islam in Ijebuland during the reign of Awujale Ademuyewo Afidipotemole.

One of the major figures connected to its origin was Chief Balogun Kuku, a wealthy and influential Ijebu warlord who converted from Christianity to Islam. After embracing Islam, he and other Muslim converts could no longer comfortably participate in certain traditional religious festivals like the Odeda festival.
To show appreciation to the Awujale for allowing Muslims to practise their religion peacefully, Balogun Kuku and other Muslim faithful began visiting the king’s palace after Eid celebrations to pay homage and offer prayers for the king and the prosperity of Ijebuland. That gathering gradually evolved into what is now known as the Ojude Oba Festival.

Another historical account links the beginning of the celebration to Imam Tunwatoba, who also led Muslim followers to appreciate the Awujale for religious tolerance.

What started as a small Muslim thanksgiving gathering eventually transformed into a grand cultural celebration involving:

Regberegbe (age-grade groups)
Cultural dancers and drummers
