*Career Opportunities and Job Prospects for Botany Graduates in Nigeria*

Botany, also called plant science(s), plant biology or phytology, is the science of plant life and a branch of biology. A botanist or plant scientist is a scientist who specialises in this field. The term "botany" comes from the Ancient Greek word βοτ?νη (botan?) meaning "pasture", "grass", or "fodder"; βοτ?νη is in turn derived from β?σκειν (boskein), "to feed" or "to graze".

Botany originated in prehistory as herbalism with the efforts of early humans to identify – and later cultivate – edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest branches of science.

Scope of Botany
Botany encompasses the study of living things in the kingdom Plantae, also known as plants. Plants are organisms that make their own food (autotrophic) using photosynthesis and includes trees, grasses, shrubs, mosses and algae. One feature of plants that distinguishes them from other organisms is the presence of a cell wall.

All living things were organized as plants or animals previously, and botany encompasses the study of all organisms and does not include animals. Botanists test both the internal functions and processes within the organelles of plants, tissues and plants communities. At every level, botanists are concerned with the classification, evolution, phylogeny or function of plant life.

As a graduate of Botany, an intending farmer or a potential buyer wishing to acquire a piece of land, you may often times be faced with the hurdles of understanding the system of land measurements in Nigeria.

In this publication, we will be analysing and comparing commonly used and misused standards as relating to land measurements in the country.

In Nigeria, land is measured in Hectares, Acres, Meters and Feet. These measurements are affected by factors which includes but not limited to, economic investment and development patterns, human and environmental factors which could lead to mass migration and artificial scarcity of lands suitable for development.

A plot of land is a marked out piece of land. According to Nigeria's land divisions, the appropriate plot for a house construction is 100 x 50ft. A hectare is a land measuring 100m x 100m or 328ft x 328ft. It is about two and half acres. On the other hand, an acre is a rectangular plot of land with a total of 4,046sqm or 43,560sq ft.
Lot of people ask, what exactly is the size of a standard plot of land in Nigeria?
According to the dictionary meaning of plot, it is a marked out piece of land for the purpose of building or farming. The word "plot" is an arbitrary term used to describe a land division carved out for property development.
The size of a plot of land can vary for different reasons but according to Nigeria's land divisions, the appropriate plot for a house construction is 100 x 50ft which can accommodate a standard house with a small compound.
To better understand land divisions used in Nigeria, different units of area are used as follows:

Hectares (ha)

A hectare is one of the least known metric units and one which potential buyers and estate developers seems to struggle with - it is a land measuring 100m x 100m or 328ft x 328ft. It is about two and half acres.

Acre

An Acre is a standard unit of measurement used by land sellers and it is almost an equivalent to the size of a standard football field.

An acre is a product of any rectangular plot of land giving a total of 4,046sqm or 43,560sq ft.
Tenth of an acre, half an acre, one-sixth of an ace - what does all this mean?
In relation to land measurements, the above divisions constitutes some fraction of an acre which means a plot can be
50 x 100ft / 15.2 x 30.5m - 463.6sqm (which means there are 8.7 plots of land measuring 463.6sqm in an acre)
60 x 120ft / 18.3 x 36.6m - 669.8sqm (which means there are 6 plots of land measuring 669.8sqm in an acre)
100 x 100ft / 30.5 x 30.5m 930.25sqm (which means there are 4.3 plots of land measuring 930.25sqm in an acre)

The Benefits of Mucuna pruriens for Brain Health

MUCUNA PRURIENS Also known as
Devil bean, cowitch, werepe or Velvet Bean.

Mucuna Pruriens is a plant from India, the Caribbean or Africa. It is a climbing shrub that has the ability to grow white, lavender, or purple flowers and causes itching upon physical contact with the outer hairs and skin. Like most herbal supplements, it possess an anti-oxidant content.
Mucuna is actually a legume, and thus has a caloric content. Beside the nutraceutical content below, mucuna (velvet) beans contain 20-35% protein by total caloric content. Mucuna also contains protein digestive enzyme inhibitors, which can be reduced with processing. Soaking in bicarbonate (following by autoclaving or cooking) has been shown to reduce a wide variety of anti-nutrients in Velvet beans, but also reduces levodopa content, the active ingredient
Long before chemicals, labs, and appointed health authorities, natural plants and practical knowledge formed the foundation for medicine. Indian Ayurvedic medicine, one of the oldest holistic medical modalities, cataloged the therapeutic properties for thousands of plants. While pharmaceutical marketing might make us wonder how we ever survived without prescription drugs, ancient knowledge has made its way back into the conversation. More than ever before, research is beginning to focus on ancient plants, herbs, flowers, and roots.
Mucuna pruriens, a tropical legume also known as velvet bean, has been used by ancient healers and is making waves in the scientific community. Ayurvedic herbal medicine has relied on Mucuna pruriens since 1500 BC to support ailments such as snakebite, intestinal disorders, sexual response, and melancholy mood. Let’s take a look at the recent studies that have evaluated how this uncommon plant can support brain health and stress management.
What are the Active Compounds in Mucuna pruriens?
The magic of every therapeutic plant resides in its beneficial, active compounds. The interaction between these compounds is typically responsible for the plant’s favorable effects. In Mucuna pruriens, levodopa, or L-dopa, is one of these compounds . [1 ] [2 ] This bioactive chemical is a precursor to several neurotransmitters, including adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine.
Mucuna pruriens has significant antioxidant action that works in tandem with L-dopa to promote brain health. [3 ] When L-dopa crosses the blood-brain barrier, it helps to increase brain levels of dopamine, an essential neurotransmitter associated with regulating mood and cognition. [ 4 ] Research also suggests that antioxidants are helpful for defending against oxidative damage by free radicals.
[5 ]
How Does Mucuna pruriens Influence Brain Health?
Research suggests Mucuna pruriens protects the brain by keeping cognitive and neural functions in check, even encouraging neural activity. [ 6 ] Studies on animals have echoed this, placing the focus on its antioxidant action. The mechanism behind this is simple — all free radicals have an unpaired electron that makes them unstable in the body. Antioxidants donate an electron to the free radical to neutralize its effects, particularly on the brain. Mucuna has an added benefit in that it fights systemic redness in the brain, which is often a factor in brain degradation. [ 7 ]
Does Mucuna pruriens Affect the Effects of Stress?
Ayurvedic tradition uses Mucuna pruriens to positively promote mental health and
stress response . A study involving 120 men who suffered from psychological stress reported that supplementation with Mucuna significantly eased stress. [ 8 ] Oddly enough, the men also had fertility issues and supplementation appeared to promote s***m quality and count. Researchers also concluded that Mucuna pruriens reactivates the antioxidant defense system, an essential biological mechanism necessary for maintaining homeostasis within the body.
Is a Therapy for Parkinson’s Disease on the Horizon?
Parkinson’s disease is partially characterized by decreased brain production of dopamine, an important neurotransmitter. Because Mucuna pruriens positively influences dopamine levels, it’s been an Ayurvedic therapy for centuries. Preliminary research indicates that the natural form of L-dopa in Mucuna pruriens provides equivalent (or better) results compared to synthetic levodopa; and without the common side effects of nausea, vomiting, and involuntary muscle movement. [ 9 ] [10 ] Now, should it be inferred that Mucuna pruriens is a cure or treatment for Parkinson’s? Not in the least. Is this study interesting in a hopeful sense though? Absolutely.
Supplementing with Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna pruriens has a rich history of use for promoting mental health. Current research supports its traditional application and hopefully additional research will gain insight into future uses. If you are considering supplementing with Mucuna pruriens, like any supplement, it’s a good idea to find an organic or wild crafted source.
