⚠️ Why Buildings Keep Failing Despite “Engineers” Involved
One of the painful realities in the construction industry today is that not every civil engineer truly understands structures and that's a major reason we keep witnessing building collapses across Nigeria.
Many clients feel at ease once they hear, "I'm a COREN-registered engineer." But let’s be honest, registration alone is not competence.
Too many so-called engineers can’t read structural drawings, don’t understand load transfer, and have never stepped into a proper design office to learn how real structures behave. Some barely scraped through with memorized formulas, but never truly grasped the principles behind them.
👉 Structural engineering is not guesswork.
👉 It’s not “trial by site” or “copy and paste” from old drawings.
👉 It’s not about knowing someone who can sign a drawing.
It’s about design knowledge, critical thinking, calculations, detailing, and safety.
Without these, the risk to lives and investments becomes huge regardless of what certificates someone holds.
Clients be careful, don’t just hire an engineer because of titles. Ask the right questions. Check their experience. Insist on structural validation. Because once the structure fails, the certificate won’t hold up the building.
Young engineers, this is a wake-up call.
COREN is important but it’s only a step. Real knowledge comes from mentorship, hands-on learning in reputable design firms, and a passion to understand the “why” behind every detail.
💬 Let’s stop celebrating paper and start celebrating knowledge.
💬 Let’s stop normalizing shortcuts and start prioritizing safety.
💬 Let’s protect the profession and the people who trust us.
This is because when an untrained engineer is in charge, the problem isn’t just poor quality but it’s deadly consequences.
