THE WOMAN BEHIND THE DOOR
Part 1...
**The Day Mother Died....
The rain started the night my mother died☔☔
I was only seven.
I remember sitting beside her on the old wooden 🛏️, holding her cold fingers while the rain beat heavily against the zinc roof...
“Mummy,” I whispered, trying not to cry. “Please don't sleep.”
She opened her eyes slowly.
They were weak, but there was something in them that frightened me.
Something that made me feel she already knew she was leaving.
“Amara…”
“Yes, Mummy?”
She struggled to raise her hand and touched my cheek.
“Whatever happens…”
She coughed.
I started crying 😭😭
“Don't cry, my baby.”
“Mummy, you will get better.”
She smiled😁😁
It was the last smile I ever saw.
“Promise me you will never trust everybody who calls themselves family.”
I frowned😾😾
“I don't understand.”
“You will.”..
She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small brown envelope.
Before she could give it to me, the door suddenly opened.
My aunt stood there.
“Ezinne, what are you doing?”
My mother immediately hid the envelope beneath the bedsheet.
“Nothing,” she replied.
My aunt stared at her for a few seconds.
Then she looked at me.
“Amara, go outside.”
“But—”
“Go!”
I ran out.
That was the last conversation my mother ever had.
Less than twenty minutes later, I heard screaming.
I rushed back inside.
“Mummy!”
She wasn't moving.
People gathered around her.
Someone covered her face with a white clothes..
I grabbed the cloth and screamed.
“No! No! Mummy is not dead!”⚰️⚰️
Nobody answered me...
I shook her body...
“Mummy, wake up!”
An elderly woman pulled me away.
“She is gone.”
Gone.
That word stayed inside my head for years.
My mother was gone.
And I was seven years old.
***Three months later, my father remarried.
Her name was Mrs. Victoria Okoro.
I still remember the first day she entered our house.
She wore a beautiful red dress and carried a small handbag.
She looked at me.
I looked at her.
She smiled.😁😁
“Come here, my daughter.”
I didn't move.
My father pushed me gently.
“Amara, greet your new mother.”
I swallowed.
“Good afternoon.”
She hugged me.
But something about that hug felt strange.
It was tight.
Too tight.
She whispered into my ear.
“Don't worry. You will learn to love me.”
I pulled away.
She smiled again.
Nobody noticed the coldness in her eyes.
Except me...
At first, Victoria was kind.
She bought me new clothes.
She braided my hair🧒🧒
She cooked my favourite food.
Whenever relatives visited, she would pull me close and say,
“This is my daughter. I love her so much.”
Everyone praised her.
“She is lucky to have such a good stepmother.”
I believed them.
Until I turned nine.
That was when everything changed.
One morning, I broke a glass while washing plates.
Victoria slapped me.👋👋
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
“Look at what you've done!”
“I’m sorry, Mummy.”
“Mummy?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Don't call me that.”
I froze.
“I am not your mother.”
I started crying.
She leaned closer.
“Your mother is dead. Don't ever forget that.”
Those words broke something inside me.
From that day, the woman everyone called my loving stepmother became my worst nightmare.
****She stopped buying me things...
She stopped sending me to school with lunch....
Sometimes, she locked the kitchen and told me there was no food...
But when my father came home, she would smile.....
“Amara has been disturbing me all day.”....
My father would look at me.
“Why are you giving your mother problems?”
I wanted to tell him....
I wanted to scream....
But Victoria always stood behind him.
Watching me....
Warning me without saying a word.
So I kept quiet....
Years passed...
I became seventeen....
And one evening, something happened that changed my entire life.
I was cleaning my father's old room when I found a photograph....
It was a picture of my mother....
She was standing beside my father...
But there was another man in the photograph....
A man I had never seen before....
I turned the photograph over....
There was writing behind it.....
“If anything happens to me, ask Nathen what happened on the night of July 14.”
My heart stopped.
July 14❓❓
That was the night my mother died...
I read the sentence again....
Then again....
My hands began shaking....
Who was Nathen?
And what happened that night?
****That evening, I waited until everyone had gone to bed.....
I quietly entered my father's room.
I opened the wardrobe...
Nothing....
I searched the drawers🗃️
Nothing....
Then I noticed a small wooden box underneath the bed....
It was locked....
I found a key inside an old shirt pocket....
My heart began beating faster...
I opened the box....
Inside was an envelope....
My name was written on it....
AMARA!!
I nearly dropped it....
Why would my father have something with my name on it?
I opened the envelope....
There was only one sentence.
“Your mother did not die naturally.”
My breath disappeared....
I read it again....
Then suddenly—
CRASH!
Something fell outside the room.
I froze....
Someone was standing in the corridor....
I quickly hid the letter beneath my clothes....
The door handle began turning.
Slowly....
I stepped backward.
The door opened 🚪
Victoria stood there...
She looked at me...
Then her eyes moved toward the wooden box🗃️
For the first time in my life, I saw genuine fear on her face.
“What are you doing here?”
I couldn't speak....
She walked toward me...
“Amara…”
Her voice was shaking.
“What did you find?”
I swallowed.
“Nothing.”
She stared at me.
Then she smiled.
But this time, the smile wasn't warm.
It was terrifying.
“You shouldn't have opened that box.”
I stepped backward.
“Why?”
She came closer....
“Because your mother made the same mistake.”..
My entire body went cold.
“What did you just say?”
Victoria suddenly covered her mouth....🤫🤫
She realized she had said too much..
I stared at her....
“You knew something about my mother's death?”
She said nothing.
“Victoria!”
She grabbed my arm.
“Listen to me carefully.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“If you love your father…”
She paused.
“…you will forget everything you saw tonight.”
I pulled my arm away.
“What happened to my mother?”
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“Ask your father who Nathen is.”
Then she walked away.
I stood there, completely frozen.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
At exactly 2:13 a.m., my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message.
“AMARA, DON'T TRUST YOUR FATHER.”
I stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
“YOUR MOTHER WAS MURDERED.”
My heart began pounding.
Then a third message appeared.
“AND THE PERSON WHO KILLED HER IS STILL LIVING IN YOUR HOUSE.”
I slowly looked toward my bedroom door.
It was slightly open.
Someone was standing on the other side.
I couldn't see the face.
But I recognized the voice.
“Amara…”
It was my father's voice.
“Who are you texting?”
I couldn't breathe.
And then—
The lights went off.......
