GLOBAL CORPORATE STRATEGIES FOR CLIMATE ACTION
The sustainable development goals was created and adopted in 2015 to tackle some of the challenges facing the world. One of these challenges is the issue of climate change which has continued to occupy the international headlines and discourse. International brands and corporation are not left behind in the global move of ensuring that climate action and affordable and clean energy are achieved by 2030. One of those numerous corporation implementing strategies for climate action is the phone manufacturing brand Samsung which has announced it plans to use 100% renewable energy in its factories, offices, building, and operational facilities in the US, Europe and china. In the area of sustainability and environmental measures, Samsung created the galaxy up cycling program through which engineers innovate to up cycle old Samsung galaxy smart phones for use as IOT solution. In a world where approximately 50 million tons of electronic are discarded each year, Samsung has taken a bold and meaningful approach to recycle through innovation. Moreover, Samsung as an international brand acknowledges that the UNSDGs address some of the challenges facing our world today. However, since they originally announced their support of the global goals in 2016, The Company has aligned its CSR effort to the goals with the focus on education, sustainability, health, and local engagement constituting its priority areas for its global citizenship effort. Furthermore, another implementing strategies and measures for climate action is the world leading energy company Schneider electric. As part of their effort of becoming one of the most innovative energy companies in the industry, they acquired renewable choice energy, a market leader in renewable energy strategy, green power and carbon offset markets. The acquisition will enhance and support the work of Schneider electric in the global renewable energy space and the company’s new energy opportunities network, A global network comprising of renewable energy technology developers, and providers, financing companies, and end users, which was initiated 2016 to help companies renewable energy and carbon goals. According to the company’s CEO Jean Pascale Tricoire there are two major technological disruptions happening in the world today: transition in the digital and transition in energy which is reflection of their collective commitment towards the research and development of renewable energy technologies for a sustainable future. In a similar effort, Tesla is an international auto-brand fast-tracking the world’s transition to sustainable energy through the production of electric cars for a green and sustainable planet. As part of its commitment towards a zero carbon future, Tesla has donated 50 EV charging stations in Canada for the charging of electric vehicles. Recent research result in the research and development of EV coming from Dalhousie university shows that Tesla may soon have a battery that can last a million miles. Another international brand scaling up the global transition to green energy is GE (General Electric) who has also gone into the manufacturing of electric vehicles to support the realization of the UN post 2030 development agenda. More so, fortune with Boston scientific, the medical device manufacturer has expressed its commitment towards achieving 100% renewable by 2024 and on target to succeed.
In the final analysis, according to Arnold Schwarzeneger, the future is green energy, sustainability, and renewable energy. The adoption and use of electric vehicles and renewable energy remains the gateway in ensuring a healthy and safe planet for future generations.
