Few years ago, we had one electrical issue in our house. You know that kind thing where one side of the house is not connecting well and everybody just wants it fixed quickly.
My family wanted to call an electrician, but one guy in our church, Prince, said he could do it. Prince said it with confidence sef. He was like, “Don’t worry, I can handle it.” And as normal Nigerians that like to save cost, we said okay na ( our biggest mistake).
We bought the wires and everything he needed. Prince came and started the work after some time, light came and everybody was happy.
In our minds, we were already feeling smart for not spending extra money to call an electrician, night came and we were watching movie. Suddenly, the bulb in the sitting room went off we thought maybe NEPA had taken light. But somehow, the outside bulb was still on.
Then the DVD was still showing sign of life, but some things in the house had gone off. At that point, confusion started, we tried putting things on and off but nothing worked.
Later, when light came back to the area, other houses had electricity. Our own house was darkness that was when we called Prince. Only for Prince to admit that he had not properly learned the work. He only knew small practical parts and wanted to try.
Now, here is the interesting part is that years later, we saw Prince again. Prince had now properly gone into engineering and actually learned the skill. He became good with the practical work.
But one day, someone referred him for an opportunity, and he missed it. Not because he could not do the work but because when they asked him questions about the basics, he struggled. He knew how to do the connection, but explaining why something works or solving technical questions became difficult.
In engineering, practical alone is not enough you need to understand the basics too. When you know both, you can work confidently, solve problems, and even grow further academically if you choose to. That is why at Fedav, we teach both the basics and practicals. We don’t just want you to know how to connect wires we want you to understand what you are doing.
