⚙️ One Generator. Multiple Faults.

Not every generator problem has one single cause.

A generator can have multiple faults occurring at the same time—what we call a multi-fault condition.

For example, poor fuel delivery may affect engine performance, a weak battery may affect starting, while a governor or electrical issue may create another set of symptoms.

This is why replacing one component and assuming the problem is solved can sometimes lead to repeat faults, wasted money, and unnecessary parts replacement.

The right approach we follow :

Observe → Check related systems → Identify the root cause → Repair/replace what is necessary → Test and confirm.

At ProMECH, we don't diagnose by assumption. We look at the generator as a complete system and trace the fault to its actual cause.

Better diagnosis. Better repairs. Better reliability.

⚠️ What Does an Instant Shutdown Indicate?

When a generator shuts down instantly, don’t assume the engine has simply developed a fault. In many cases, the shutdown is the generator’s protection system responding to a condition it considers unsafe or abnormal.

Possible triggers include:

Low oil pressure

High engine temperature

Overspeed or abnormal speed

Low fuel or fuel-system problems

Electrical faults or overload conditions

Low battery/control voltage

Faulty sensors or protection circuits

Do not restart without findingout the reason for the instant shutdown.

At ProMECH, we don't just reset the fault and move on.

We diagnose the cause, fix the problem, and confirm proper operation.

Proper diagnosis before repair. ✅

What was causing the loss of compression?

We didn't jump to the conclusion that the valve or another major component was faulty. ❌

After proper diagnosis and a few minutes of systematic checks, we identified the actual fault: a burnt cylinder-head gasket.

But we didn't stop at replacing the gasket.

We traced the failure to determine what caused it in the first place—the root cause.

Once the necessary repairs were completed and the generator was properly tested, the client was satisfied. ✅

At ProMECH, we don't just replace parts; we diagnose, identify the root cause, and fix the problem properly.

Professional diagnosis. Proper repair. Reliable performance.

At ProMECH, we don't work on assumptions ❌.

Proper diagnosis comes before repair and replacement of parts where necessary. ✅

A generator problem may appear to be caused by one component, but replacing that component doesn't always solve the actual fault.

That’s why we don't just change parts because they appear faulty.

We diagnose the system, identify the root cause, and repair accordingly.

Because replacing parts is not the same as fixing the problem.

🚨 Fuel Leak? Don’t Wait.

A fuel leak is not a minor issue you should ignore until the generator finishes running.

Fuel can come into contact with hot engine components or electrical sources, creating a serious fire hazard. Continuing to run the generator can also worsen the fault and lead to unnecessary damage.

If you notice fuel leaking:

1. Turn off the generator immediately.
2. Close the fuel valve, if accessible and safe to do so.
3. Keep away from flames, sparks, and ignition sources.
4. Do not restart the generator until the source of the leak has been properly identified and repaired.

Don’t take chances with fuel leaks. Safety comes before power.

KVA is not the same as KW.

This is an important distinction when selecting and operating a generator.

KVA (kilovolt-amperes) represents the generator's apparent power capacity, while KW (kilowatts) represents the real/active power being delivered to perform useful work.

The relationship is:

KW = KVA × Power Factor (PF)

For example, a 10 KVA generator operating at a power factor of 0.8 can deliver approximately:

10 × 0.8 = 8 KW

This is why simply seeing a generator rated at 10 KVA does not mean it can supply 10 KW of real power under all load conditions.

The type of load matters because motors, pumps, compressors, air conditioners, and other inductive loads can operate at lower power factors and demand more current for the same amount of useful power.

Don't size a generator by KVA alone. Understand the KW requirement, power factor, starting demand, and load characteristics.

Know the rating. Understand the load. Choose correctly.

Not every generator is suitable for every load.

Choosing a generator should go beyond simply looking at the KVA rating.

The type of equipment being powered, its running power, starting current, power factor, and how the loads will be introduced all matter.

For example, motors, pumps, compressors, air conditioners, and other inductive loads can require significantly more current during startup than they consume while running.

An undersized generator may experience:

Voltage and frequency dips

Engine dragging or speed instability

Overheating

Frequent overload trips

Poor performance

Premature component wear

On the other hand, consistently operating a generator far below its practical operating range can also create efficiency and engine-loading problems.

The goal isn't to buy the biggest generator. It's to select the right generator for the actual load.

Before choosing a generator, consider:

Total running load + starting demand + power factor + load characteristics + appropriate operating margin.

Right generator. Right load. Better performance.

Does your generator sound like it is struggling whenever you apply a load?

That dragging or bogging-down sound is often a sign that the engine is struggling to maintain the power required by the connected load.

Possible causes include:

🖋Excessive load beyond the generator's practical capacity

🖋Governor problems causing poor speed regulation

🖋Restricted airflow from a dirty air filter

🖋Fuel-system problems limiting fuel delivery

🖋Poor combustion or low engine power

🖋Low or poor-quality engine oil, increasing friction

🖋Worn engine components reducing available power

The important point is that the sound is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Don't immediately assume the alternator is faulty. Observe what happens to the engine speed, frequency, voltage, and sound when the load is applied. That information helps identify whether the problem is primarily mechanical, fuel-related, control-related, or electrical.

A generator that struggles under load is telling you something. Don't ignore the signal.
