The Importance of Proper Block Alignment in Quality Construction
In construction, good finishing begins long before plastering and painting. The quality of a finished building is greatly influenced by how accurately the blocks are laid from the very first course.

Proper vertical and horizontal alignment of blocks is essential. Each course must maintain a consistent level, while the vertical joints should be properly controlled to ensure that the wall remains straight, plumb and uniform. When blocks are poorly aligned, the defects often become more obvious during plastering, tiling, installation of doors and windows, and ultimately in the final appearance of the building.

Another important aspect is accurate corner squaring. Building corners should be properly checked to ensure they are square and meet the required dimensions. A well-squared corner provides a reliable reference for continuing the walls and helps prevent cumulative errors throughout the building.

Just as important is the neat rubbing and finishing of mortar joints. Excess mortar should be properly removed and the joints neatly finished as the work progresses. This creates cleaner masonry, improves the appearance of the wall and provides a better surface for subsequent plastering and finishing works.

When masonry is properly executed, walls remain straight, plumb and level. Corners are properly squared and accurate.

Plastering requires less correction and excessive thickness.
Doors, windows and other finishes are easier to install accurately.
The final surface appears cleaner, sharper and more uniform.
It reduces unnecessary material wastage during finishing.
Most importantly, it demonstrates attention to detail and professional workmanship.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE CHEAP DECISION

Mr. Musa wanted to build a small extension to his house. As expected, he invited a few professionals to inspect the project and provide quotations.

The first engineer carefully assessed the site, reviewed the soil condition, and prepared a detailed proposal.

"Sir, the project will cost ₦3.5 million," the engineer explained.

Mr. Musa nearly fell off his chair.

"₦3.5 million? For this small work? Thank you, I'll get back to you."

The second professional submitted a similar estimate.

Again, Mr. Musa wasn't impressed.

A few days later, a man arrived carrying a tape measure, a shovel, and an abundance of confidence.

"How much can you do it for?" Mr. Musa asked.

"₦1.8 million. No need for all those engineering grammar. We will handle it."

Mr. Musa smiled and immediately awarded the contract.

Construction commenced. Everything seemed perfect for the first few weeks. Pictures were taken. Friends were impressed. The contractor was celebrated as a genius.

Then the rainy season arrived.

The extension developed cracks.

The floor settled.

Doors refused to close.

The roof started leaking.

One morning, Mr. Musa stood in his compound staring at the cracks and wondering whether they came free with the discount package.

Eventually, he called the same engineer whose proposal he had rejected months earlier.

The engineer arrived, inspected the damage, and quietly prepared another quotation.

"To correct the defects, demolish the failed sections, redesign, and reconstruct properly, the cost will be ₦5.2 million."

Mr. Musa looked at the document and sighed.

The engineer smiled politely.
