WaddenCentre

WaddenCentre The Wadden & Delta Research Centre provides access to a range of expertises, facilities and technologies that involve coastal systems and tidal environments.

The Wadden Systems Research Centre (WSRC) supplies easy access to those who would like to make use of expert teams, equipment, technology and protocols as developed for a variety of tidal environments. The centre is also responsible for running a dataportal, which supplies internationally standardised and open access to more than 10.000 data sets on long-term field observations in coastal seas. In

ternational courses and training in the theory and practice of research in wadden systems are presently developed. For more than 100 years, multidisciplinary teams of the NIOZ have gained specific insights and expertise on the functioning of the Wadden Sea. More recently, studies in Mauritania, Australia, Alaska, Oman and China have broadened the expertise, including the design and deployment of innovative monitoring technology.

Multidisciplinary teams for solving the problems of coastal ecosystems

The Wadden & Delta Centre (WDRC), part of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ), provides access to a range of expertises, facilities, technologies, and monitoring programs that involve coastal systems and tidal environments. Coastal systems are strongly affected by climate change as well as human activities. Flood-prone deltas and coasts make cost-effective flood protection measures an urgent issue. Our expert teams investigate innovative solutions to prepare the coast in a naturally way. The centre contributes to a collection of functional data and the development of (interactive) information products and tools for policy and scientific research and is responsible for running data portals, which supplies internationally standardised and open access to data sets on long-term field observations in coastal seas. International courses and training in the theory and practice of research in coastal systems are developed.

For more than 100 years, multidisciplinary teams have gained specific insights and expertise on the functioning of the Wadden Sea including the design and deployment of innovative measurement techniques. More recently we investigate the nature functions of coastal and intertidal ecosystems to be integrated with their flood defence functions and how to manage these.
