At Maliepaard, Bosman Van Zaal has realised a new wide-span greenhouse for tulip forcing, equipped with full automation and mechanical dehumidification.

The greenhouse features 24 OptiDry Advanced-DX units, which actively remove the moisture produced by the tulips and help create an optimal growing climate. Thanks to the hydroloop system, excess heat can be discharged to the outside air via a water circuit and dry cooler whenever that heat is not required. This allows the energy screen and roof vents to remain closed, resulting in significant energy savings.

In addition, the greenhouse has been fitted with a new heating system, CHPand HTS (heat storage tank). The CHP supplies the business with both electricity and heat. When the heat is not immediately needed, it is stored in the HTS for efficient use later, for example during the night.

The OptiDry Advanced DX uses the natural refrigerant R290 (propane). This means lower energy consumption, an environmentally responsible solution, and a system that is prepared for future regulations.

This project is a strong example of how climate control, energy efficiency and future-proof technology come together in modern horticulture.

During our seminar, we will take a closer look at these kinds of innovative solutions and show how technology and cultivation are increasingly working together in smarter ways.

A recent article by HortiDaily highlights an important challenge: the propagation layer in North America remains highly fragmented, with significant variation in scale, technology adoption, and biosecurity standards.

From our experience working with Ontario Plants (OP), this observation strongly resonates.

As Mathieu van de Sande explains: “Propagation is where consistency, plant health, and ultimately production success are determined. As the industry evolves, the need for standardized, scalable, and controlled propagation environments becomes increasingly critical.”

At Ontario Plants, continuous investment in advanced propagation facilities is key to meeting growing demand and ensuring uniform, high-quality starting material for growers across North America. By integrating high-tech greenhouse solutions, optimized climate control, and strict hygiene protocols, they are setting a benchmark for the sector.

Together with Bosman Van Zaal, Ontario Plants is taking steps toward a more integrated and future-proof propagation infrastructure supporting the next phase of growth in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA).

Steeds meer bedrijven stappen over op hybride energiesystemen, waarbij warmtepompen worden gecombineerd met bestaande installaties zoals WKK’s of ketels. Dat geeft flexibiliteit én zorgt in de praktijk voor forse gasbesparing, een stabieler klimaat en minder afhankelijkheid van grillige energieprijzen.

Dankzij subsidies zoals SDE++ worden deze oplossingen bovendien steeds sneller rendabel. Tegelijkertijd krijgen we vaak de vraag: kies je voor CO₂ of R290 warmtepompen? Het eerlijke antwoord: die keuze hangt af van veel meer dan alleen het koudemiddel. Juist de combinatie van factoren bepaalt wat in jouw situatie werkt.

We are pleased to share a progress update on the ‘Serre Green’ project for Wageningen University & Research (WUR).

Construction is progressing well on site. The glazing of the greenhouse has started and is moving forward smoothly, while the greenhouse roof is now nearly fully closed. With every step, the project is taking shape and moving closer to the next phase.

This project is being delivered turn-key by Bosman Van Zaal, meaning we are responsible for the entire process from engineering and coordination to construction and final delivery.

It is a great compliment that Wageningen University & Research has once again chosen Bosman Van Zaal as a partner. It confirms the trust in our people, our collaborative approach, and our integrated turn-key solutions.

With ‘Serre Green’, multiple disciplines within Bosman Van Zaal come together to realize a future-ready research facility for Wageningen University & Research.

🌱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

We are proud to have contributed to the innovative Endless Summer KG project by Gemüsebau Steiner in Kirchweidach (Germany), a project where modern technology and responsible agriculture come together.

In this concept, young lettuce plants are first grown in containers in a semi-automated nursery system. Once the plants reach the right stage, they are transplanted into floating rafts where they continue growing using hydroponics.

This approach enables efficient, clean and resource-saving production of leafy greens, using significantly less water while supporting year-round cultivation.

For this project, Bosman Van Zaal delivered the cultivation systems for the nursery, including container handling, lifting installations, pipe rail systems with integrated irrigation and an automated container return system.

Great to see how innovative greenhouse technology and sustainable cultivation methods contribute to the future of food production.

Yesterday marked a key moment in the development of Project Butterfly: the first plants have successfully arrived in Compartment 101 at Butterfly Orchids.

This milestone represents the transition from construction and commissioning to the first operational phase, a crucial step in a project where horticultural technology, collaboration, and precision come together.

We are proud to see this complex phase realized, and we would like to thank all colleagues and partners involved for their dedication and expertise.

Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of honouring several valued colleagues
during a festive gathering dedicated to their impressive work anniversaries.
Martin and Marco delivered personal speeches, expressing heartfelt appreciation for each jubilaris and their dedication over the years.

We celebrated the following milestones:
• Justin – 12.5 years of service
• Michael, Barry, and Wim – 25 years of service
• Ben – an incredible 40 years of service

Each jubilaris received a personalised anniversary newspaper, filled with anecdotes and memories shared by colleagues. A tangible tribute to their commitment and impact.

For Samada Plants in Poederoijen, the Netherlands, Bosman Van Zaal developed and delivered a fully automated mixing line.

This system combines plants of various colours into a single tray and achieves a capacity of up to 480 trays per hour.
It includes a gantry robot, dual conveyors and tray fillers, a tray destacker, tray stacker, and buffers for infeed and outfeed.

The result is an efficient, precise, and scalable solution that increases productivity and reduces labour costs. We highly value the trust and partnership of Samada Plants in this project.
