The report shows our sustainability journey and how we are building a responsible, resilient company that is ready for the future. More than anything, though, it is about people. The report exists because colleagues around the world chose to act, often on their own initiative.

A lot of what they do never makes it into a report. Computers we no longer need find a second life at a school in Thailand. Leftover cardboard is reused as protective filler in our boxes. Goods arriving from Thailand are assembled in the United States, so they can be made in America. Small choices, made everywhere, that together add up to real change.

Few companies in our field take this step. We are glad we did, and we are doing it together, across the whole company.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫?

When Babcock Wanson built their new factory in Nérac (France), they faced a tricky challenge: capturing welding fumes at the source, not just in the open workshop, but deep inside their large industrial boilers.

They approached us, and together we engineered a solution built around freedom of movement and true source extraction.

Here is what made it work:

🔧 12 hose reels, each with 10 meters of Ø150 mm flexible ducting, mounted on two parallel rails so operators can position the extraction point exactly where they need it.

🧲 Custom magnetic nozzles, developed specifically for this project. They snap onto the steel shells and follow the curvature of the boilers, delivering stable source extraction without any complex installation.

The result for operators on the floor:
✅ Drastically lower exposure to welding fumes
✅ Cleaner air, even in confined spaces
✅ Faster, simpler setup and less handling
✅ Better comfort during work inside the boilers

Do you know what is in the air?

During welding, the visible smoke is only part of the story. Alongside it are particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and gases that leave no trace at all in what you can see.

Welding fumes are classified by the IARC as carcinogenic to humans. That makes air quality more than a matter of a workshop that looks clean. It is about exposure, and exposure is measured in what people breathe, not in what they notice.

There are different ways to control it. What matters is that something is done, and that it is matched to how the work is actually carried out.

Because when it comes to air quality, what you cannot see still matters.

The European Parliament and the Council have reached a provisional agreement to strengthen worker protection against hazardous substances. The agreement still needs to be endorsed and formally adopted by both institutions. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫.

One of the key changes is the 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐱 𝐈 of the Carcinogens, Mutagens and Reprotoxic Substances Directive (𝐂𝐌𝐑𝐃), reinforcing the importance of preventing exposure in the workplace.

The agreement also introduces new occupational exposure limits for several hazardous substances, 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞.

But meeting regulations starts with understanding what's happening in the air.

While source capture and ventilation remain the first line of defence, knowing whether those measures are actually working is just as important. Are particulate levels dropping? Are your workers breathing cleaner air? Without continuous monitoring, those questions are hard to answer.
