🔥 When process safety fails: A wake-up call for the process industry ⚠️
In April 2020, a serious explosion at the Valero Meraux refinery in Louisiana released a flammable cloud of hydrogen and hydrocarbons, leading to a devastating explosion that injured an operator and caused millions in damage.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of what’s at stake in the process industry. Under extreme pressure, even experienced teams can make the wrong decision, especially when systems allow unsafe valve operations to happen.

🚨 Protecting people in high-risk environments 🚨
When CO₂ fire suppression systems are used in industrial settings, they’re great at fighting fires, but they can also replace oxygen with CO₂ and create a serious asphyxiation risk for people working in those spaces.

At a major organic foods wholesaler, this safety challenge was tackled head-on. 👇

👉 In their automated sorting center, maintenance teams were exposed to hazardous CO₂ release scenarios.

👉 The solution? A combination of valve interlocks, key exchange units, and a structured lockout/T-card system to ensure the CO₂ fire suppression system stays safely deactivated during maintenance.
