“We are seeing strong interest from the commercial and industrial sectors, where the urgency to decarbonise, reduce electricity costs, and increase independence from the grid is particularly high,” explains Jiajun Cen, Co-founder and CEO of AQUABATTERY.

AQUABATTERY’s saltwater flow battery aims to deliver storage at ~€0.05/kWh by 2030 for systems of 10+ hours. Using only non-critical raw materials—such as salt and water—and scalable tanks enables low-cost, long-duration storage without cycling degradation, making it ideal for heavy daily use and long-lifetime applications. Unlike lithium-ion or vanadium systems, it uses locally sourced materials and an embodied carbon of just one-tenth the CO₂ of lithium-ion batteries, offering a highly sustainable solution. Its non-flammable, non-toxic electrolyte eliminates fire and explosion risks, simplifies permitting, and supports secure use in urban areas or critical infrastructure.

To meet 2030 climate goals, Europe will need at least 65 GW of long-duration energy storage—well beyond the reach of today’s dominant battery technologies. AQUABATTERY is well-positioned to serve this growing demand. In the near term, AQUABATTERY also focuses on meeting the rapidly expanding behind-the-meter market, enabling co-located storage for onsite renewables in industrial facilities and buildings.

AQUABATTERY aims to launch a standardised module within three years for behind-the-meter applications, targeting industry, building decarbonisation, and critical infrastructure. Ongoing R&D efforts include enhancing power stacks, developing advanced membranes, and implementing smart control systems to boost performance and efficiency. These innovations will secure AQUABATTERY’s edge in delivering safe, sustainable, and cost-effective long-duration energy storage for Europe.
