✨ SIG-MSP Meeting Recap ✨

Earlier this month, our community came together in Vienna for the autumn meeting of the Special Interest Group on Management of Service Portfolios (SIG-MSP). Service specialists, managers and directors of from across Europe and beyond joined two half days of discussions, warmly hosted by ACOnet at the University of Vienna.

Two topics shaped the programme: digital sovereignty and strategy. The question running through both days was what they look like in action, with real examples of best practice and of what to avoid.

Here are a few highlights:

🔹 Sovereignty in the service portfolios. A survey showed that our community of NRENs already weigh sovereignty in their service decisions, with vendor lock-in, data control and jurisdiction topping the list. CSC - Tieteen tietotekniikan keskus, CESNET, z.s.p.o. and SURF showed what it looks like in practice, and the GÉANT procurement team introduced the new “GÉANT Principles and guidelines for European Sovereignty”.

🔹 Strategy in practice. ACOnet shared how R&E networking is organised in Austria and how it could develop. Asiera, CESNET and GÉANT showed how they take a strategy from approval to delivery.

🔹 A new community of practice. A lively round table ended with clear and enthusiastic interest in a new group on all aspects of strategy.

And a special moment: we celebrated Christian Panigl of ACOnet, who has been part of our community for 40 years and received a GÉANT Community Award at . Thank you, Christian, for 40 years of building this community with us!

Let’s go back in time for a moment ⏪

This April, we gathered in Utrecht for the third edition of , with over 160 participants from 31 countries. There was a keynote that had the whole room on its feet, lightning talks on everything our security community cares about, and a lot of good company (and coffee ☕) along the way.

Now we’re getting ready for Security Days 2027, under the theme “Security. Autonomy. Resilience.”, and the programme starts with you. Whether you’ve tackled a difficult security challenge, developed a new approach or learned something from an incident, your story could help others. Ideas for unconference sessions and participant-led discussions are just as welcome.

GÉANT and our community of at the Symposium 2026

Earlier this month, we joined around 500 people from 35 countries in Florence, just days after the EOSC Federation entered production. The conversation has shifted from building individual services and platforms to connecting infrastructures, so that researchers can move seamlessly between data, services and computing across Europe.

For our community, this is a familiar territory. The trusted connectivity, federated identity, secure access and cross-border collaboration that we, the GÉANT community, have built together over many years are now seen as critical enablers of the Federation, with and highlighted in sessions on the EOSC EU Node and the EuroHPC Federation Platform.

The EOSC Symposium was a reminder that the Federation will not be built by technology alone, but by communities working together across borders, disciplines and infrastructures. That is where we have a unique responsibility: to keep providing many of the foundations the Federation depends on, so that Europe’s researchers can access the data, services and opportunities they need to innovate, collaborate and compete on a global stage.

What could you achieve with six months of expert guidance and a community committed to your growth? 🎓

For Jovan Simonoski, the Trust and Identity Incubator Mentorship (TIM) programme 2025 participant, the answer included a Bachelor thesis built on the work he did during the programme, alongside practical skills, international connections and a local mentor by his side.

Cycle 13 of the TIM programme runs for six months, from January to June 2027. It’s a paid opportunity for students and early-career professionals to work with leading experts on real Identity and Access Management (IAM) challenges, and it can be combined with thesis work.

Are you a student or a recent graduate in computer science, engineering or a related field? Speak to your local , as candidates must be nominated and registered by a GÉANT member NREN. And if you work at an NREN, consider who in your community could take this step.

You’ve just arrived at the airport and spot the free Wi-Fi. What do you do first?

That moment is a perfect trigger for a new small security habit: switching on your VPN before you connect. Public Wi-Fi in hotels and airports is not always secure, and a VPN encrypts your internet traffic to help protect your data from being intercepted.

Not sure where to start? Check whether your organisation provides a VPN service such as . These are often free for users and quick to set up. Do it every time you connect and, before long, you won’t have to think about it.

season begins... with the Call for Proposals!

Just as our community is woven from a rich tapestry of voices, skills and perspectives, stretching across borders, cultures and disciplines, TNC27 is where those threads come together.

It will take place in Liège, Belgium, on 7-11 June 2027, and for the first time in the history of TNC, it will be hosted by two NRENs: Belnet and Fondation Restena. Liège’s history was shaped by steel and textiles, which makes it a fitting home for this year’s theme: “Different threads, one fabric”.

We invite you to help build the TNC27 programme. How can you do that?

🔹 Side meetings: half-day discussions on shared topics of interest, for up to 100 participants.

✨ GÉANT Project Open Day 2026 Highlights ✨

Last week in Brussels, we welcomed representatives from the EU institutions, research infrastructures, university associations, embassies and permanent representations, and regional bodies to the first-ever GÉANT Project Open Day, co-located with the GÉANT Project Symposium. Together, we celebrated over 25 years of our partnership and looked at how it can keep supporting Europe’s digital ambitions.

Our CEO Lise Fuhr opened the day by reflecting on the role our community has played over the past quarter century. And a video address from Kilian Gross, Director for Enabling and Emerging Technologies at DG CNECT (Digital EU), described GÉANT and our community of as a strategic European asset connecting more than 66,000 institutions and 60 million users.

Here are highlights from the Open Day that illustrated the importance of the trusted digital foundation that we have built:

🔹 Multiplier effect on national and regional levels: Dirk Haex (Belnet) described the GÉANT model as building together once, adapting locally and multiplying the impact. Gilles Massen (Fondation Restena), Aris Sotiropoulos (ΕΔΥΤΕ - Εθνικό Δίκτυο Υποδομών Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας - GRNET), Cezary Mazurek (Poznańskie Centrum Superkomputerowo-Sieciowe PCSS) and Anastas Mishev (MARnet) showed what this looks like in practice, from cybersecurity and digital identity to AI, quantum and regional cooperation in South East Europe.

🔹 Supporting science at scale: Fabio Hernandez (IN2P3/CNRS) presented the data challenges of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. With around 30 petabytes of data and millions of images expected to be transferred over the coming years, the project depends on seamless international connectivity across several continents and multiple research and education networks.

🔹 Global dimension: Mark Urban (RedCLARA) showed how decades of cooperation between Europe and Latin America have created lasting capacity and brought benefits to both regions.

This one common message emerged through the day: the GÉANT project is much more than a network. It’s a partnership between the European Commission, the GÉANT Association and our NREN members, built on trust, expertise and shared purpose. And it’s a model that works.

GÉANT Node enters production in the EOSC Federation 🎉

Since our selection as a candidate Node in April this year, we have moved from candidate to operational participation in the Federation. On 8 October, GÉANT was one of 13 Nodes that joined the operational EOSC EU Node as the Federation moved into production. Shortly before, our CEO Lise Fuhr signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the EOSC Federation in Amsterdam, setting out how we will work with other Nodes to develop the Federation together.

What does this mean for our community?

🔹 that don’t yet participate directly in the Federation now have a route to explore how their services and resources can contribute through the GÉANT Node.

🔹 By connecting GÉANT’s capabilities with those of other EOSC Nodes, the GÉANT Node supports the interoperability and trusted access needed for research communities to collaborate across institutional and national boundaries.

🔹 The MoU gives us a framework to work with other Nodes on technical, operational and organisational arrangements, and to contribute to governance committees and working groups.

Lise commented on the occasion: “The EOSC Federation has real potential to bring European research closer together. With our Node now in production, GÉANT builds on our years-long expertise in providing trusted digital infrastructure for & . The MoU gives us a framework for collaboration with the wider Federation as it evolves. We look forward to working alongside other Nodes and our NREN community to connect services and resources, helping researchers across Europe to access and benefit from them.”

A vulnerability gets a score of 9.8 out of 10. What do you do next? 🔍

Numbers have a powerful influence on how we make decisions. A Critical rating can send us into immediate action, while a Low one might wait for the next maintenance window. But a score doesn’t necessarily tell us what matters most in our own setup.

This week, our community is in Brussels together for the GÉANT Project Symposium 2026 🤝

Over three days, project participants come together to review progress against our objectives, make sure our plans keep pace with Europe's fast-changing environment and, just as importantly, spend time with each other.

The opening plenary was a wonderful way to begin. Grażyna Piesiewicz from the European Commission took us back to the idea that excellence in research cannot stay within national borders. From that idea, we built GÉANT together, along with "the 5th freedom," the freedom of knowledge moving across borders.

Grażyna recognised the professionalism and collaboration that have allowed the GÉANT Project to adapt to Europe's needs again and again over the last 25 years. And looking ahead, she shared three aspects that make this project so important:

🔹 Sovereignty and interoperability: Europe needs an infrastructure like ours that can evolve and adapt, with open standards and no vendor lock-in built in.

🔹 Innovation: Europe needs an infrastructure like ours, where new technologies in areas like quantum, Time & Frequency and fibre sensing can be tested and developed. Our network is not only a channel for transporting data, it can also be a platform for innovation.

🔹 Trust: at the core of the GÉANT model, from to , and ever more important as Europe develops the EU digital identity wallet. Trust cannot be added at the end. It needs to be embedded from the beginning, which is how we have been building within the project from the start.

She described GÉANT and our community of as the silent heroes: often invisible, but essential. And behind them are real people making it happen every day. 600 colleagues from 43 countries and 55 organisations are working together on a series of projects that began in November 2000 and have been running successfully for over 25 years.
