We took BERSTIC’s research to the Digital Twin Tech Summit 2026 in Amsterdam and to Spain, confirming that Colombian science is not only engaging in dialogue but also proposing global solutions. Beyond the formal agreements, this experience has been about building real collaborative networks and gathering insights on AI and Digital Twins that we are bringing back to transform our local communities. 🌍🚀

We spent time exchanging experiences with world-class leaders such as Siemens, ASML, Philips, and FARI, and exploring how cities like Rotterdam are utilising AI and Digital Twins to manage complex systems.

La Guajira is a region of contrasts. Whilst it has one of the highest potentials for renewable energy in Colombia thanks to its wind and solar resources, it also faces environmental challenges that affect its ecosystems and communities, such as limited access to drinking water and plastic pollution.

The energy transition is an opportunity to build a more sustainable future, but this change does not depend solely on the generation of clean energy. It also requires transforming our consumption habits. At Berstic, we believe that every action counts. Reducing the use of single-use plastics, reusing materials and choosing more sustainable alternatives are decisions that help protect the ecosystems and natural resources that sustain life.

Today we invite you to reflect on how our daily decisions can contribute to caring for the environment and the sustainable development of strategic regions such as La Guajira. Because the transition towards a more sustainable future begins with the energy we produce, but also with the decisions we make every day.

Behind every global energy transition goal lies a real place with its own history. 🌍✨ It is sometimes assumed that a solution that works in Europe or North America will work anywhere. But energy ecosystems cannot be simply copied and pasted; what looks perfect on paper comes up against unique human, logistical and environmental realities on the ground. 💧📦👥

International cooperation is a wonderful driver of learning. However, real impact does not come from replication, but from adaptation with empathy and intelligence. At BERSTIC, we believe that a sustainable future is not imposed, but co-developed by connecting global knowledge with the deep wisdom of local reality. 🤝🌱

A new chapter of our book has been published! 📖✨

We’re thrilled to share this new material with you, where we explore how technology can transform education and energy in rural communities. ☀️💻

In this chapter, we explain how we created a Digital Twin and even a video game for an ethno-educational school. Yes, a video game! 🎮 Through gamification, students learn to manage real solar energy systems, connecting the game to real-time data (IoT) from their own panels.

What we’re most passionate about in this work is seeing how science improves children’s education and gives us real tools to optimize energy in areas that need it. 🌍🌱

All of this was made possible thanks to the support of the for our projects

The energy transition also begins with a question: How do regions where energy is still limited make decisions? ⚡

📄 We have a new scientific publication!

In this study, we explore how decision-tree models can help us better understand economic activities in Colombia’s Non-Interconnected Areas (ZNI).

Why does this matter?
Because in these regions, where energy poverty remains a reality, making better decisions can transform life opportunities. Using real-world data, we identify key factors such as:
🌍 regional conditions
🏠 access to services
🤝 community dynamics

All with a clear goal: to provide evidence for designing more relevant and sustainable policies, infrastructure, and solutions.

Science makes sense when it helps us better understand these regions and build more resilient futures 💛

New publication! 🧪✨

I’m so excited to share that our article has been published in ChemSusChem. We dove right in to investigate how combining photocatalysis and piezocatalysis can create more efficient chemical processes with a minimal carbon footprint 🌍.

What I like most about this work is that it opens real doors for using biomass and saving energy in organic synthesis. 💡

It’s an honor to collaborate with Dr. Marta Paszkiewicz-Gawron and Prof. Juan Carlos Colmenares. What a great experience working with the program in Poland! 🇵🇱

During our time in La Guajira, we learnt that technology alone does not bring about change. Real change happens when we work hand in hand with the communities that need it most; when we can harness seawater to provide drinking water for people in the villages through a solar-powered desalination plant; when a digital twin meets the gaze of a student; and when innovation sits down to have a conversation with the local area. 🌵💻

We are not delivering projects; we are inhabiting processes. Processes that transform how we learn and, above all, how we imagine the future.

Thank you to the community for teaching us that science, without heart, is merely technical. 💛

Sometimes, science begins like this: sorting waste, planting a vegetable garden, transforming what seemed useless 🌱

At the institución etnoeducativa rural La Paz , students and the community are turning environmental care into learning, a circular economy and real opportunities.

♻️ Plastics that are collected and put back into circulation
🐾 Organic waste that feeds animals
🌿 Vegetable gardens and composting that teach sustainability
🧵 Reused materials that can now be turned into rucksacks and new stories

Small actions that are building something much bigger: a different way of relating to the land 💛
We are thrilled to be part of this process alongside a community that demonstrates that innovation also springs from the local level.

Some conversations seem straightforward… until you take a closer look.
Take water and energy, for example: we always treat them as separate issues. But in the real world, that’s not the case, because everything is connected.

And to explain this better, today we’d like to introduce you to someone 👇
This is Panelito.
He’s not here to lecture like a teacher, nor to oversimplify things. He’s here to do something more useful: to help us think more clearly.
Panelito sees what we often fail to see: that a decision on energy affects water, that a decision on water impacts communities, and that all of this happens at the same time.

That’s why at BERSTIC we work with scenario simulations.
Not to “predict the future”, but to understand what might happen before making decisions. Because looking after resources doesn’t start when something goes wrong… it starts when we understand the whole system. And yes, Panelito will be around asking us some uncomfortable questions 😉
