The last AEI Executive Board meeting was held in Malta together with representatives from our Maltese affiliate, the AAE. We were informed about the situation in Malta and shared views on how we can deal with the most common challenges. Big players in Malta, among others, are EasyJet, Lufthansa Technik and KM Malta Airlines.

Air Canada’s ongoing Tech Ops dispute is beginning to attract wider attention after Flightdrama received multiple messages from workers and followers asking why the situation has not received broader aviation coverage.

The issue centers around Air Canada maintenance employees and skilled trade workers who have been involved in a long-running battle over union representation. Workers in Tech Ops have been pushing to move from IAM to AMFA, a trade-specific aircraft maintenance union, while the dispute has moved through multiple legal and regulatory stages. Recent decisions from Canada’s Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) have intensified tensions after a reconsideration panel reversed an earlier ruling and also ordered previously cast representation ballots to be destroyed, prompting strong reactions from workers and union groups.

Demonstrations have also been organized by Tech Ops workers and supporters, with some employees arguing their ability to choose representation is being delayed or blocked. IAM and AMFA continue to strongly dispute each other’s positions publicly.

At this stage there is no indication of operational disruption for passengers, but for many Air Canada mechanics this has clearly become much bigger than an internal union disagreement.
