Project Talaria

Project Talaria Project Talaria is a team of students from TU Delft dedicated to designing, building and flying a personal flying device. Come fly with us!

We have finished our crash analysis and came to the following conclusion:

“A failure in the battery of the control system caused an error in the controller that led to an unauthorized system reboot during an attempted flight causing the servo’s to increase the collective pitch which led to the uncontrolled taking off and consequent crash.”
In two and a half years we went from a group of students with some theoretical knowledge on aviation to building a functional electrical coaxial-helicopter with a payload capacity of 90kg. It has not been an easy journey, with many hurdles both technical and financial, but we overcame each and every barrier in our way to achieve our primary goal of building a personal flying device.

What we have learned from this experience we will take forward with us to future endeavors!

Thank you to all who supported us all this time, we could not have done it without the help and encouragement you gave us!

When innovating and pushing new technologies to the limit we can expect things like this to happen. It is part of the learning process and makes us understand the device a whole lot more.

Last week our helicopter crashed after a series of successful indoor tests, causing damage to some parts of the device.

No one was hurt during the incident and as a team we always knew that there was a risk of a crash. This however does not take away the fact that we have designed, built and flown our own version of a flying device. We also have all the necessary knowledge to fix the device in less than two weeks!

In order to get all the necessary replacement parts, we would need a total of 25’000 euros. This would allow us to still make it to the GoFly competition.

We want to thank you for your continuous support over the last two years and we would like to ask you to refer us to anyone who might be interested to help in making this dream a reality.

Project Talaria is looking for some help to get to San Francisco for the GoFly Prize from 15th of February until 4th of March. Close to the Palo Alto region. We need some help to find a location to do some indoor testing for our electric helicopter! (30x30m by 7m height will do)(100x100x22 ft)
Anyone has/ knows someone with an empty warehouse, garage, hangar?

The “Hermes II”, will become the first of its kind device to fly this coming month as flight testing begins with pilots from KLM and the Royal Netherlands Air Force at the NLR base in Nijmegen. The personal flying device was designed, built, and tested by a small group of students from Delft Uni...

Last week, we presented our work at the IQPC Energy Storage for Aerospace, and More Electric Aircraft conferences. Having our concept reviewed by professionals like Dr. Josef Kallo of DLR and Dr. Eric Darcy of NASA, and receiving positive feedback on our design choices was a truly amazing experience!

PS: that's our chief engineer preparing for the presentation :P

Curious how it would be to fly one of our devices? Stay tuned!
