Daniel Buhagiar is in Tokyo this week, presenting FLASC’s offshore energy storage solution and exploring opportunities in the Japanese offshore wind market.

Japan’s offshore wind sector is growing rapidly, and energy storage will play a key role in ensuring a stable and flexible grid. This visit is part of a broader initiative to foster international collaboration and explore potential partnerships.

The week kicked off with a dynamic Business Matching Event, bringing together 60 European innovators and key Japanese stakeholders. Now, attention shifts to Smart Energy Week / Green Transformation Week at Tokyo Big Sight, where FLASC is showcasing its technology at the EU Pavilion (East Hall 7, Booth E81-8).

A big thank you to the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) for their support!

FLASC is taking a major step towards market entry with the development of a grid-connected pilot plant at Plant One Rotterdam BV in 2025-2026.

Backed by EIC Accelerator funding (European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency), this project will validate key performance data, ensure grid compliance, and undertake final qualification of the system ahead of market entry.

Why does this matter?
As offshore wind scales up to meet the REPowerEU target of 60 GW by 2030, energy storage remains a critical challenge. FLASC HPES (hydro-pneumatic energy storage) bridges the gap, offering a compact, cost-efficient, and sustainable solution to stabilize wind energy supply, enhance profitability, and support grid flexibility.

Our solution is designed specifically for offshore, leveraging ocean-based isothermal processes to maximize efficiency. By tackling wind intermittency, demand fluctuations, and grid congestion, FLASC is set to accelerate the energy transition.

Sixteen partners from across the European offshore renewable energy sector have joined forces in project 🐚 OESTER (Offshore Electricity Storage Technology Research) supported by the MOOI scheme from Netherlands Enterprise Agency

OESTER is on a mission to mature, de-risk, and validate innovative offshore electricity storage solutions from technological, economic, environmental, and societal perspectives. Key technologies under evaluation include:
- Short-term storage: batteries integrated into wind turbine monopiles (Verlume)
- Medium-term storage: Compressed Air Energy Storage (FLASC B.V.)and Underground Pumped Hydro Storage (Ocean Grazer) co-located within wind farms
- Long-term storage: electrolyser system installed on offshore platforms directly connected to wind farms (Battolyser Systems)

OESTER presents FLASC an exciting opportunity for further develop out solution towards market entry, while highlighting the offshore energy storage opportunity for the Netherlands. We look forward to a close collaboration with other technology developers, potential clients and key stakeholders within this consortium!

Meet the OESTER Consortium:
TNO (project coordinator), RWE, Vattenfall, APG, SSE Renewables, Verlume, FLASC B.V., Battolyser Systems, Ocean Grazer, DMEC (Dutch Marine Energy Centre), Seaway7, Deltares, University of Groningen, NewGround LLC and Energy Storage NL

Jens de Kanter and Daniel Baldacchino had a great visit to Subsea 7 Official in Stavanger to align on our agenda for the year ahead, particularly as we jointly work towards the IJmuiden Ver tender with the FLASC Energy Storage system. Meeting the project team and engineers early on ensures we’re on the same page and making meaningful progress from the start.

Beyond the technical discussions, this visit reinforced the importance of strong relationships - getting to know the people we are working with now and in the future... and some cultural exchange as well.

A productive step forward as we build momentum together!

Luke Aquilina joined FLASC as a Mechanical Engineer (Consultant)!

Luke is no stranger to FLASC, as he is currently finalizing his PhD on the design and setup of the MUSICA ECU demonstrator project (in the background of the picture). Since 2015, Luke has been collaborating with FLASC on various projects, including his undergraduate research and the FLASC prototype during his MSc studies.

In his part-time role, Luke will be contributing to the development of the qualification program supported by the EIC Accelerator. Another half of the time will be still devoted to University of Malta.

Welcome, Luke!

Enjoy reading the new article: "Subsea Long-Duration Energy Storage for Integration with Offshore Wind Farms" by Charise Cutajar, Tonio Sant, Luke Aquilina, Daniel Buhagiar and Daniel Baldacchino.

The study delves into the operation and thermal performance of a subsea system catered for integration with offshore wind farms. Numerical simulations have predicted that operating the system in open-cycle configuration can boost the energy storage density by up to 8 times with respect to an equivalent HPES unit operating in closed-cycle mode.

Further details can be found in the published article: https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/17/24/6405

The collaborative research between the University of Malta and FLASC B.V. forms part of Project SAICOPES and is funded by Xjenza Malta under the FUSION R&I Research Excellence Program; Project Reference: REP-2023-004.

Bloomberg reports that Europe's offshore wind industry is at a crossroads.

Countries like Denmark and Sweden, long leaders in renewable energy, are now facing a dilemma: abundant wind power is driving electricity prices so low that new investments are no longer attractive. Recent trends, such as Denmark's largest-ever offshore wind tender receiving zero bids, signal the need for a major shift.

The core challenge lies in matching renewable energy supply with demand. With power often produced when it's not needed, some wind farms are forced to operate at negative prices or even shut down. Without intervention, this misalignment threatens to slow the transition to clean energy and prolong reliance on fossil fuels.

This is where steps in. Offshore wind paired with advanced storage solutions like FLASC’s technology can reshape the equation. By storing excess power and delivering it when demand peaks, we can stabilize electricity prices, ensure grid reliability, and boost the economic value of wind energy.

Now is the perfect time to start a decades-long boom in offshore wind energy storage.

Wrapping up our Katapult Ocean accelerator program with a visit by Daniel Buhagiar to Oslo for Investor Day where FLASC B.V. was presented to over 300 investors. Great to meet the team and make new connections in person...followed by an early morning sauna and very refreshing fjord swim to top it all off.

Big thank you to the Katapult Ocean team for organising a great program, we certainly learned a lot, and we are looking forward to the next steps in our investment journey!
