Surgical Robotics at UTwente

The Surgical Robotics Lab (SRL) is part of the Department of Biomechanical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering Technology) at the University of Twente, The Netherlands.

SRL is directed by Prof. Sarthak Misra. We are also part of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Groningen and University Medical Center Groningen. SRL is affiliated with MIRA-Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine and an active member within the Center for Medical Imaging.

SRL has a dynamic research agenda, and we consist of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, clinicians, and industrial collaborators. We focus on developing innovative solutions for a broad range of clinically-relevant challenges.

The research facilities within the lab is divided into three different subsections. These include Needle Steering, Continuum Robotics, and Medical Micro-robotics.”

Endovascular surgery, one of the procedures undertaken by clinicians in this field, utilizes relevant anatomy knowledge along with cutting-edge, minimally invasive technology. Surgical instruments, like, needles, tubes, endoscopes, or catheters are specifically designed devices that treat such problems. These instruments are manually inserted into the body, duct, or vessel.

Percutaneous needle insertion procedures are commonly used for diagnosis (e.g. biopsy) and therapy. Continuum robots in this field relate to snake-like catheters and they are used for fluid drainage, disease treatment, or reaching specific sites in the body for targeted drug delivery. Miniaturized robots in the field of microrobotics possess an untethered structure are suitable for a wide range of tasks, ranging from micromanipulation and microassembly to minimally invasive surgical interventions.

SRL has lab spaces both at the university of Twente and also at UMCG in Groningen. Lab members have access to rapid prototyping facilities such as a laser cutter, 3D printer, a range of ultrasound systems, Universal Robots (UR10 and UR5) and extensive surgical navigation instruments. We use RoboDK for simulation and offline programming of our industrial robots and Xenus EtherCat drives for current control. Furthermore, In efforts to translate basic-science results into pharmaceuticals and other medical technologies, we aim to collaborate with numerous industrial partners and manufacturing companies, including Wijdeven Inductive Solutions B.V. , Copley Controls Corporation, Gibas and Supermagnete.
