Cocoon offers the solution

Prevent corrosion and mold with the seamless preservation by the Cocoon Mothballing System. Or view other Cocoon products such as Facade Covering, Roof Covering and Membrane. A high-quality, sprayable synthetic material, developed around 50 years ago and still unbeaten. No other product has Cocoon’s reputation. No other product has Cocoon’s unique qualities, and no other product has so many possible applications. Cocoon Mothballing System
The Cocoon Mothballing System provides the objects to be protected with a weather-proof, tough and seamless Cocoon ‘skin’, which is hermetically sealed against moisture and dust. Within this ‘cocoon’, the relative humidity is kept at approximately 40%, which prevents the formation of mould and corrosion. In addition, rubber and other used synthetic materials remain intact at this humidity level. Materials protected in this way are available for use at any time. Cocoon Storage
At Cocoon LNG you can save your mothballing project for a long period of time. We can also closely monitor your stored spare-parts that have been placed in a Cocoon. Cocoon Wall finish
In places where high demands are placed on things such as hygiene, air-tightness etc, Cocoon has been the favourite choice of wall and ceiling finish since the 1970’s. Cocoon Wall and Ceiling Finish is a beautiful, high quality synthetic coating, which can be applied in situ, on virtually every material and in any colour required. The extremely long durability and colour fastness makes Cocoon Wall and Ceiling Finish a cost-efficient and durable solution. Do you have any questions about our opportunities? Save time and costs with Cocoon’s easy delivery and peelable coating. Mothballing around the world
Netherlands – Amsterdam

From our home base in Amsterdam we provide mothballing projects all over the world. Shell utilized our mothballing techniques to successfully preserve their spare-parts. Mothballing prevents corrosion and ensures that the product is still usable after storage. Fuji Trading Co Japan
Sembawang Shipyard – Singapore

We store spare parts for LNG tankers in our depots that have been enforced with our Cocoon mothballing system. This ensures that the spare parts will stay as good as new. The Cocoon mothballing system was invented at the end of the second World War to preserve all equipment like fighter jets, Marine vessels and others after the second World War ended. With this system they preserved the equipment but kept them in an status ready to be used. When machines are not used for extensive periods of time, they need to be stored in such a way as among others to prevent corrosion. Mothballing equipment offers a perfect solution. About Cocoon
We are a small company located in Hoofddorp, a town nearby the airport, and we also have our dedicated storage facilities in Drachten, the north of The Netherlands where we store spare parts of LNG carriers. Alexander van der Zee, owner of Cocoon (since 2002), has established roots in the painting industry. His grandfather had a paint factory where his father also worked in and so became quite familiar with the production and application of paint-related products from a young age. When the opportunity came to offer cocoon products, he seized that chance to further develop new applications for the technology. Cocoon’s method
Cocoon can do everything from A to Z. We have impact on the entire chain, from the first advice to the final application and after-sales service. Therefore we can offer the best guarantees. We are not the cheapest as the coating is applied by hand, resulting in more working hours. But we do deliver craftsmanship and bespoke solutions. Before parties contact us, they have often tried a lot of other solutions. They have searched for cheaper alternatives, but then experience problems regarding durability and the formation of corrosion and mold, because the coating needs to be applied seamlessly, or because of insufficient elasticity or chemical resistance. The right look and feel
Alexander: “Perhaps that is what gives me the most energy: sitting down at the drawing table, thinking along with others until we have found the perfect solution. I am a happy person if we can give the design of an architect, contractor and finally the client the right look and feel by applying our product.”

“Usually, when you store a plane for a long time, it smells to be honest.”

“With this plane, there’s nothing wrong. It's as if you were just in it yesterday. That was a surprise for us too. That was the idea, of course, but it’s always nice to see that everything is fine and it just smells like any normal plane should, and then you think, well, we didn't do all that for nothing.”

Pipe pe*******ons sealed and finished in the same color at A-Pier, Schiphol Airport

Penetrations are much less noticeable when the flashing and trim are the same color as the roof, the facade, or the gutter.

The overall look is clean, finished, and professional rather than “patched up.”

No more moisture, air, or dirt infiltration at critical connection points at the Gatehouse on A-Pier at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

The Cocoon solution prevents leaks, corrosion, and material degradation, and protects the building from external weather conditions for years to come.

It also helps avoid high maintenance and repair costs.

In addition, existing assets are preserved for longer.

Are your roof gutters truly protected against the moments that cause the most damage?

Let’s talk about how to make those vulnerable connections last.

Just like a spider spins its own threads, we seal all the holes with our spray gun.

Per plane, the undercarriage is put in an aluminium container because you have to connect somewhere airtight. Besides, you don’t want moisture from the concrete base to get into the plane.

Both the deflated tyres and the aluminium bin are packed. This makes them part of the Cocoon Mothballing System.’

In fact, nothing has been taken out or removed except the motors, APU and batteries.

If we look ahead when we open it up the cabin of these E2´s will just still be as it was and the livery will still look neat.

Utrecht’s premier technical hub Eneco sealed by Cocoon Holland!

In Utrecht, Eneco and its predecessors have been generating energy for the city for almost 100 years. Thanks to the ´BioWarmte plant´, the gas-fired power station in Utrecht needs to be switched on less often.

To ensure the plant performs at its best, we have implemented our joint and pe*******on sealing solution.

This week, our KLM Cityhopper project received both local and national attention!

Something we’re genuinely proud of as a team at Cocoon Holland.

What started as a technical preservation challenge at Twente Airport became a project that drew interest far beyond the aviation sector.

Together with KLM Cityhopper, we worked on preserving multiple Embraer 195E2´s during an extended period of inactivity. A situation where precision, control and reliability are key especially when the goal is to return the aircraft to service without compromise.

As Gertjan Lichtenveldt, Fleet Manager Embraer at KLM, shared in a recent article in Up in the Sky, written by Lieneke Koornstra de Doelder:

“Internally, the project has even taken on a new name: ´Operation Borboleta´ - Portuguese for “butterfly”. A fitting reference, as the aircraft now looks as good as new.

An aircraft that has been grounded for two years usually doesn’t smell very fresh. You can already notice that in places like the Aviodrome. But the NXB? It smelled perfectly fine. No signs of mould. Everything exactly as it was when we sealed it.

There were also initial concerns about possible fungal growth in the fuel tanks. In practice, those concerns proved unnecessary.”

For us, this project is a strong example of what controlled mothballing should deliver: Not just protection on paper, but a predictable and measurable outcome in reality.

We’re looking forward to seeing all four aircraft return to operation by the end of this year.

A big thank you to everyone involved both within KLM Cityhopper and our own team for making this project a success.

The sun is shining, so Twente’s largest butterfly is emerging from its cocoon!

KLM retrieves aircraft from ‘time capsule’ at Twente Airport.

During cocooning, aircraft are fully wrapped to protect them from the elements while they are grounded for extended periods.

“Humidity is controlled inside the cocoon so that the entire aircraft is preserved neatly, like a time capsule,” explains Lichtenveldt (KLM-fleetmanager), pointing to the different layers of the cocoon. “If you don’t do that, mold can develop in the cabin.”

For KLM, this proved to be a lifesaver two years ago, when several Cityhoppers had to remain grounded due to engine problems.

KLM Embraer 195 E2 back into service after a temporary grounding at Twente Airport!

When aircraft are temporarily grounded, we make sure they remain in top condition.

We are extremely proud to announce that the aircraft are returning to service.

In 2024, KLM Cityhopper temporarily parked four Embraer 195 E2 aircraft at Twente Airport due to problems with engine availabillity.

KLM Cityhopper’s Embraer 195 E2 aircraft are equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF-series engines. In 2024, this manufacturer faced issues regarding engine availability, which meant the aircraft could not be used temporarily.

The aircraft were then completely wrapped in special film our “cocoon” to protect both the exterior and interior from the elements and other external factors.

The wrapping process took six weeks.

Now that availability from Pratt & Whitney has improved, KLM Cityhopper’s aircraft are gradually being prepared for return to service.

This week, one of the aircraft is being unwrapped: PH-NXA.

The Cocoon product is being removed, the wheels are being installed, and the aircraft is being prepared for its first tests. The aircraft then undergoes a comprehensive inspection and an airworthiness inspection.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Cocoon team and all the partners who were involved during this project, Gertjan Lichtenveldt, Jeroen Van Eijk, Twente Airport and to everyone who contributed to this wonderful project.
