We are proud to present our new colleague, Rishabh Kaushal! Rishabh joined the Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University as a Postdoctoral Researcher this summer. A very warm welcome to you, Rishabh!

Rishabh has obtained a Ph.D. from Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (India), and worked at the PrECOG IIITD Research Lab led by Prof. Ponnurangam Kumaraguru in the domain of computational social science.

Before joining IDS, Rishabh worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Technology at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, a University established by the Government of NCT of Delhi. At this university, he advised undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. students in a number of research projects mostly related to the field of computational social media, computer vision, and NLP.
Rishabh has also regularly conducted summer workshops (tutorials) driven by the “learning by doing” approach in the domain of machine learning and deep learning using Python as a programming tool.

Given his keen interest in computational social science, he participated in the Summer Institute in Computational Social Science (SICSS) held at the University of Bologna, Italy, in June 2022. Earlier, he also participated in the
3rd Summer School on Computational Social Science, organized by GESIS in Berlin, Germany, in 2019. At this event, Rishabh and his team won the best summer school project award!

We hope you will enjoy your time with us here at Maastricht University!

Our colleagues Birgit Wouters and Chang Sun spoke at yesterday's "Data Science meets Brain Science and Microscopy" event with Pint of Science Netherlands in Maastricht! Birgit spoke about Data Science and the Amrapali Zaveri Awards, and Chang about Personal Health Data and Diversity.

The event was organized by the initiative of Anna Schüth, in memory of our dear colleague Amrapali Zaveri (1984-2020). A wonderful video of Amrapali, created by loving and proud parents (Jyotindra Zaveri and Priti Zaveri, was shown at the beginning of the event.

Anna Schüth was awarded with the first "Amrapali Zaveri Award" for Data Science ever, and she financed the event with the money from this award. Anna and Amrapali were to work together on Anna's VENI project: The two scientists wanted to bring Brain Science, Data Science and Microscopy together. With this event, both Amrapali and her legacy were honored 🙏

The next call for the Amrapali Zaveri Awards, coordinated by Birgit Wouters, Visara Urovi and Martina Summer-Kutmon, opens in October. You can read more about the awards here: https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/events/amrapali-zaveri-award/amrapali-zaveri-awards-data-science

Today, Professor Adriana Iamnitchi will speak at the PASC23 (Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing) 2023 Conference in Davos, Switzerland.
pasc23.pasc-conference.org.

Anda's presentation is entitled "Modelling Multi-Platform Information Diffusion in Social Media: Data-Driven Observations".

Abstract:
Accurately modeling information diffusion within and across social media platforms has many practical applications, such as estimating the size of the audience exposed to a particular narrative or testing intervention techniques for addressing misinformation. However, it turns out that real data reveal phenomena that pose significant challenges to modeling: events in the physical world affect in varying ways conversations on different social media platforms; coordinated influence campaigns may swing discussions in unexpected directions; a platform’s algorithms direct who sees which message. This talk will discuss challenges in modeling social medial activity in various contexts, from political crises to coordinated disinformation campaigns.
