Battery Manufacturing: Sealing Requires Thermal Precision — Not Just Heat

⚙️ In pouch cell assembly, multilayer films must be thermally sealed to create a hermetic enclosure.

These films combine:
• aluminium barrier layers
• polymer sealing layers

🎯 The challenge:
Activate the sealing layer —
without overheating adjacent materials or internal cell components.

Thermal input must be:
• localized
• repeatable
• compatible with automated assembly

🔥 Infrared enables contact-free, spatially defined heating of the sealing zone.
This allows:
• selective activation of functional layers
• minimal thermal load on surrounding areas
• fast response for high-throughput production

📈 The result: sealing becomes a controlled, localized thermal process, not a bulk heating step.

🌊World Ocean Day: Another day to focus all our engineering energy on technologies that deliver measurable impact in environmental applications.

Ballast Water Treatment requires reliable and validated disinfection.

UV irradiation is a well-established, chemical-free method—but system performance is not determined by installed lamp power alone.
The decisive factor is the delivered UV dose (mJ/cm²) under real operating conditions:

• Flow dynamics
• Transmittance (UVT)
• Reactor design
• Lamp performance and aging

In a nutshell: effective disinfection depends on whether the required dose is consistently achieved across the entire reactor volume. 🌊

Hello from the FESPA Global Print Expo! 🌍

It is inspiring to see how rapidly the print industry continues to evolve.

One thing is becoming clear:
The future of wide-format printing is no longer defined by print speed alone.

The real differentiator lies in intelligent UV-LED curing — precise, dynamic, and fully synchronized with the entire printing process.
As print applications become more demanding, UV-LED technology is evolving into a key performance factor for productivity, print quality, energy efficiency, and process reliability.

We look forward to connecting with you to exchange ideas and explore new possibilities together. 🤝🚀

Battery Manufacturing: Calendering Depends on Temperature — Not Just Pressure

⚙️ After drying, electrodes are calendered to define density, porosity, and thickness.
This step is often seen as purely mechanical.
But in practice, temperature at the nip is a critical process variable.

🎯 The challenge:
Material behaviour during compression depends strongly on temperature.

Too low:
• insufficient densification
• mechanical defects

Too high:
• binder degradation
• structural damage

🔥 Infrared enables localized, fast preheating directly before the calendering gap.

This allows:
• precise adjustment of electrode temperature
• rapid response to material or recipe changes
• heating only where it is needed — not the entire line

📈 The result: calendering becomes a thermo-mechanical control process, not just a pressure setting.

Many interesting discussions on environmental technologies at IFAT this week.

One topic: duct relining. At first glance, not an obvious environmental application—but it becomes one when you look closer.
Instead of excavating pipelines—with all the consequences: construction sites, road closures, detours, and traffic disruption—UV-based relining enables fast, trenchless rehabilitation from within.
UV light is used to cure resins as the system moves through the pipe, allowing efficient and controlled in-situ repair.

What works well with standard liners becomes a question of process control—not speed—when dealing with thick-wall liners:
• Control irradiation, not just installed power
• Balance surface vs. depth dose
• Ensure uniform exposure along the full length

Are you working in duct relining?

Battery Manufacturing: Electrode Drying Is a Kinetics Problem

⚙️ In lithium-ion battery production, electrode drying is one of the most critical steps.

After coating, solvents must be removed from the slurry — typically in continuous roll-to-roll processes.

At first glance, this is a throughput problem.

In reality, it is a drying kinetics problem.

🎯 The challenge:

Dry fast enough to match line speed — but controlled enough to preserve coating structure.

If drying is too aggressive:
• binder migration can occur
• particle distribution becomes non-uniform
• adhesion and electrochemical performance are affected

🔥 Infrared heating enables direct energy input into the coating layer, with fast response and controllable power density.

This allows:
• rapid adaptation to line speed
• zoned drying profiles along the web
• reduced thermal inertia compared to convection systems

The result: drying becomes a controllable process step, not a compromise between speed and quality.

👉 Talk to the IR experts at Ushio about stabilising electrode drying processes.
