Early Wednesday morning, 1/16/19, M6 (C unit) was sent to 363 E. High St. on a routine medical call. When the paramedics entered the building, their new Carbon Monoxide detector, clipped to their first in medical bag, went into alarm, with a reading of over 100 ppm. They immediately upgraded this call to a major CO incident, and requested additional resources. A total evacuation was ordered and a room to room search was begun. During the search, the firefighters encountered CO levels in excess of 160, almost 5 times the dangerous threshold level.

Springfield City Area Transit provided 3 buses to hold some of the evacuees, while others were sheltered in place in the building community room. Columbia Gas, building maintenance, and the HVAC company were all called to the scene, and the source of the CO was quickly identified as a problem with the furnace, which was then shut down. Along with the ventilation provided by search teams as they cleared each apartment, the levels quickly dropped, and by 0930, we were able to allow residents to return to their apartments. This was very nearly a major tragedy that was averted by the new CO detectors, which the Division just put into service on 12/17/18.
