Built for long-term monitoring

Installed by South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in August 2021, this Obscape station has been operating continuously in the field for nearly five years with minimal maintenance and no battery replacement.

After years of autonomous operation, the first service visit was finally needed… and the result?

A simple battery change — and it’s back in action.

Long-term environmental monitoring depends on systems that keep working with minimal intervention, reducing maintenance visits, lowering operational costs, and keeping valuable data flowing.

Designed for real-world conditions, our systems are built to support reliable, low-maintenance operation over extended deployments.

Not every success story is dramatic — sometimes it’s simply returning to a site years later and finding the system still doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Measuring where it matters.

Environments PLLC recently deployed an Obscape Block III WaveDroid buoy in the nearshore waters of North Carolina, within Onslow Bay.

The objective is to evaluate local wave conditions and better understand how they relate to historical deeper-water observations — helping support adaptive design decisions with real measurements.

What makes this deployment especially exciting for us is that the WaveDroid represents some of Obscape’s early buoy development work. The lessons learned from these early systems helped shape the products and platforms that followed — including the OBS-BUOY 7 WATT.

It’s always rewarding to see early-generation equipment still operating in the field and continuing to deliver value years later.
And judging by one curious pelican, the deployment already attracted at least one local observer

Thanks to Joseph Little for sharing the deployment.

Every great decision starts with clarity.

In a world where problem-solving is everything, environmental data should be simple, accessible, and easy to act on.

At Obscape, we build monitoring solutions designed for the toughest environments — rugged, robust, and reliable systems that help transform complex environmental data into clear direction when it matters most.

From data to decisions.
