Our project Inclusive Wise Waste Cities now has its own LinkedIn presence. The project is funded both by the Dutch Research Council and the National Science Foundation China and aims to develop analytical tools to clarify the effects of emerging waste management systems in cities, design an approach for infrastructure management that is more inclusive and will validate their results in cities in the Netherlands and in China.

In this project, we collaborate with researchers from TU Delft and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) and with Peking University, City University Hong Kong and Tongji University in China. Together the partners analyse how in neighbourhoods of major Chinese and Dutch cities waste is currently collected, processed and recycled. We will also study the value chain for waste management in those locations, which roles organizations and social groups play in the chain and how they are affected by possible changes to the way this chain is organized.

We want to congratulate our Scientific Director Martin de Jong on his Inaugural Lecture which was held on November 12th. We used this opportunity to gather one last time before stricter Corona measures were enacted again, and to listen to his ideas on Inclusive Prosperity and his suggestions on how to change currently existing boardrooms to guarantee inclusion and prosperity for everyone.

Martin was so kind to expand upon his lecture in his latest blogpost West of Eden. Congratulations once again!

The number of people smoking has been in strong decline over the last couple of decades. Where previously non-smokers where forced to sit in a small separate side room in restaurants if they wanted to avoid cigarette smoke as much as possible, it has now become the norm that restaurants are non-smoking environments to protect the health of both guests and employees. Smoking has become more and more socially unacceptable, and the government has been following suit by implementing new laws and regulations which restrict smoking in public spaces. But companies, be it to***co companies, oil companies, etc., have been and are still trying to fight back against these restrictions by directly influencing either scientists or policymakers in their decision-making.

Yogi Hendlin, assistant professor at the Erasmus School of Philosophy, has recently published the article "The disinformation playbook: how industry manipulates the science-policy process—and how to restore scientific integrity" together with scientists from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the Journal of Public Health Policy in which they describe the measures companies take to protect their interests over public interests, but also outline steps the scientific community should take to shield science from corporate interference:
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1057%2Fs41271-021-00318-6

In addition to some extremely useful diagrams and tables of the various stages of disinformation and how to fight back, this article provides a great overview of how many industries from pharmaceutical to to***co and e-cigarettes to chemical to fossil fuels undermine democracy, the environment, and public health.

This short and accessible paper can be useful for policymakers, teachers and students, and those who wish for a concise analytic summary. On November 8 Lieselot Bisschop, professor for Public & Private Interests at the Erasmus School of Law, sat down with Vers Beton Live to discuss co***ne trade and crime at the port of Rotterdam.

More than 61.000kg of drugs have already been seized at the port in 2021 alone compared to the 40.000kg last year. The actual scale of drugs that come into the country undetected is unclear, but it is evident that the port and drug trafficking are closely linked.

A summary of the discussion (in Dutch) with a link to the broadcast can be found on our website.

In the past year, we have seen countless memes of blundering politicians. These videos, photos, images and written parodies were often top-level entertainment and helped us through the hardship of corona, which is lasting longer in Europe than in many other places. Martin de Jong wonders if there is a darker side to this fun and whether the dismal picture they draw of key politicians in liberal-democratic Europe is not actually revealing of how much we are in need of a quantum leap in the quality of our leadership.
