Cosco Shipping Specialised Carriers, the group’s multipurpose arm, has launched Ningbo-Zhoushan port’s first direct container shipping service to South America, targeting the growing Chinese exports of EVs and components to the region.

The service began last week, when the 77,000 dwt 2025-built multipurpose pulp carrier Green Sepetiba completed its first direct sailing from the port's Baiquan area to Sepetiba, Brazil. This new weekly service, branded as the "BRICS Express," directly connects key Chinese industrial ports with major Brazilian hubs in as fast as 30 days.

The service is designed to meet urgent shipping demands by leveraging Cosco's specialized fleet.

Wan Hai Lines is strengthening its position in a key regional market with a significant investment. The company's acquisition of Terminal C9 at Osaka Port fits directly into its long-standing strategic focus on the intra-Asia trade.

Wan Hai Lines is acquiring Terminal C9 in Japan’s Osaka port for $87m, aiming to consolidate its market share in the Japan-Taiwan routes.

Intra-Asia routes are the Taiwanese shipping line’s primary focus, and Wan Hai is said to be the largest container shipping company in the intra-Asia trade by both capacity and network density

US President Donald Trump has announced that any country that purchases oil or gas from Venezuela will face a 25-percent tariff in its trade with the United States, starting on April 2.

The latest tariff threat came in a Truth Social post on Monday morning, in which Trump assailed Venezuela for spurring migration to the US. He also criticised its government, led by President Nicolas Maduro.

“Venezuela has been very hostile to the United States and the Freedoms which we espouse,” Trump wrote.
“Therefore, any Country that purchases Oil and/or Gas from Venezuela will be forced to pay a Tariff of 25% to the United States on any Trade they do with our Country.”

The tariff appears designed not only to strike a blow against Venezuela but also against China, the US’s main economic rival and the largest consumer of Venezuelan energy products.
Later, at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump said he would also place tariffs on pharmaceuticals, automobiles and aluminium.

The US president also announced he would seek to launch an ‘External Revenue Agency’ on April 2 to collect tariffs.

Oil deliveries to the Czech Republic via Russia's Druzhba pipeline have stopped for the second time in recent months, but officials said there is no immediate threat of fuel shortages.

According to a news report published by EURACTIV on Wednesday morning, Czech Industry and Trade Minister Lukáš Vlček confirmed the disruption and assured that domestic oil supplies remain secure.

"We are aware of the situation and are addressing it. Refineries in the Czech Republic are well prepared for this scenario, and we have a robust system of state material reserves in place," Vlček told the Czech News Agency.

He said the outage would not affect gasoline and diesel production, a claim echoed by Orlen Unipetrol, a major Czech oil processor and distributor.

"Currently, fuel production at both our refineries, in Litvínov and Kralupy nad Vltavou, remains unrestricted and at full capacity," Orlen Unipetrol said on X, formerly Twitter. However, the company requested an emergency oil loan from the State Material Reserves Administration to maintain full production at the Litvínov refinery.

Vlček and Orlen Unipetrol emphasised the Czech Republic's plan to end reliance on Russian oil, with the expanded Transalpine Oil Pipeline (TAL) expected to provide sufficient supplies from alternative sources as the country aims to fully transition to Western oil supplies by mid-2025.

Oil edged higher after a tumultuous few sessions that saw prices plunge to a three-year low, as traders continue to digest President Trump’s sweeping tariffs on major US trading partners and OPEC+’s unexpected production hike.

Brent rose toward $70 a barrel after losing more than 6% over the prior four sessions, while West Texas Intermediate was near $67. Trump is delaying some levies on automakers and considering exemptions for certain agriculture products, but still moving forward with reciprocal tariffs on April 2.

Oil edged higher from the lowest close in six months as the market grappled with an uncertain demand outlook following President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on major US trading partners.
