The Hague Tech The Hague's first community of entrepreneurs, startups, corporates, and tech enthusiasts building for Werken in een kick-ass locatie met high-end faciliteiten?

Join us!

What a day at EUtechfest! We’re overwhelmed by all the positive reactions we’ve received. Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Hague Tech.

If there’s one thing we take away from today, it’s that change starts with taking action. We can talk about digital sovereignty and a more independent European tech ecosystem, but real progress happens when we take the first steps ourselves. And that’s exactly what made today so special. A room full of people who aren’t waiting for someone else to make a move, but are curious, willing to learn and ready to take action.

A huge thank you to all our speakers, workshop hosts, partners and everyone who helped make EUtechfest happen.

Here are some of our favourite moments from today. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn page, as we’ll be sharing the full photo gallery soon! Want to keep the momentum going? Discover OneGov and join us for our next edition, TechFest NextGen, where we’ll explore what the future of technology might bring. Check the links in bio!

🇪🇺 EUtechfest Meetup Speaker Announcement: Wouter Welling, Digicampus | Tenant in Your Own House: The Wickedness of Regaining Digital Sovereignty over Digital Public Infrastructures

What happens when governments become so dependent on external technology providers that they no longer have full control over their own digital infrastructure? It’s a question that’s becoming increasingly relevant as geopolitical tensions rise and governments reconsider their dependence on non-European technology.

At EUtechfest, we’re welcoming Wouter Welling, Programme Director at Digicampus and member of The Hague Tech, to explore the challenges of regaining digital sovereignty over public digital infrastructure. Together with Prof. Nitesh Bharosa (who was the first professor on GovTech and Innovation) and Prof. Mark de Reuver from TU Delft, Wouter has published a research paper examining why regaining control over digital public infrastructure is such a complex challenge.

During this meetup, Wouter will share insights from their research and discuss two different approaches:
🔹 Firefighting: What can governments do now to address immediate risks and dependencies?
🔹 Fire prevention: How can we develop an ecosystem of more sovereign alternatives to reduce those dependencies in the future?

Both approaches raise important questions about the technology governments rely on, the choices available to them and the challenges of changing existing systems. Wouter brings extensive experience in digitalisation policy and implementation within the Dutch government. As Programme Director of Digicampus, he works on digital innovation and collaboration around public-sector challenges.

This session offers an opportunity to look at digital sovereignty from a public-sector perspective, with research-based insights into the challenges governments face and the possible ways forward.

🇪🇺EUtechfest Meetup Speaker Announcement: Jochem de Groot, NLdigital | Digital Sovereignty: Can Europe Do It Alone?

Europe wants to become less dependent on non-European technology. But how realistic is it to become digitally independent when so much of our infrastructure, software and data is connected across borders? At EUtechfest, we’re welcoming Jochem de Groot, Head of Policy & Public Affairs at NLdigital, to discuss what European digital sovereignty could realistically look like, both now and in the coming years.

The debate around digital sovereignty often focuses on reducing our dependence on American and other non-European technology providers. But building European alternatives, replacing existing systems and changing how organisations work with technology is far from straightforward.

During this meetup, Jochem will explore the opportunities and limitations of European digital sovereignty, looking at what is achievable and where international dependencies are likely to remain. Jochem brings an interesting perspective to this discussion. Alongside his role at NLdigital, the Dutch trade association for the digital sector, he is a member of the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) and the Atlantic Commission.

He’s also the author of Kolonisten van de Cloud, a book exploring the geopolitical rise of technology companies and their growing influence on our world. So, his session adds an important perspective to the EUtechfest programme: understanding what Europe can realistically achieve, and which choices could help us get there.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, policymaker or technology professional, join the conversation and bring your questions!

🇪🇺 EUtechfest Workshop Announcement: Soevereiniteit: wat kan ik er morgen zelf aan doen? | By Jeroen Wouda, Open Cloud Alliantie |

Digital sovereignty is a big topic. But what can you actually do about it within your own organisation? You don’t have to wait for new European regulations or major changes in the technology industry to start making different choices.

At EUtechfest, Jeroen Wouda from the Open Cloud Alliantie (OCA) will show how organisations and professionals can take practical steps to reduce their dependence on technology providers. Whether you’re running a business, managing IT infrastructure, advising clients or making decisions about software and cloud services, there are choices you can already make today.

In this session, Jeroen will explain where you can start, which decisions make a difference and how to approach digital sovereignty without having to change your entire IT environment. Jeroen is Senior Technical Cloud Specialist at Uniserver, a Dutch sovereign cloud provider, and an active contributor to the Open Cloud Alliantie. He advises organisations on cloud infrastructure, compliance and security and contributed to the OCA whitepaper Wendbaar en Weerbaar – Architectuurprincipes voor een open overheidscloud.

This Dutch-language session is part of a two-part programme by the Open Cloud Alliantie, giving participants an opportunity to explore digital sovereignty from different perspectives.

Only 20 days left until EUtechfest, so sign up to not miss out on a spot!

Last week, we hosted Tidal Control and RiskWork at The Hague Tech for a practical session on something that more and more startups and scale-ups are running into: ISO 27001 compliance. More than 20 attendees, 12 organizations, and amazing focaccias. Not a bad Thursday evening at The Hague Tech!

Dennis van de Wiel from Tidal Control, together with Khali Barez RE and Jawid Barez RE CISM from RiskWork, took the group through the certification process, common challenges and, importantly, how companies can approach compliance without turning it into a project that takes over the entire organization.

There was plenty of room for questions too, with founders and professionals able to put their own compliance challenges directly to the experts. A big thank you to Dennis, Khali and Jawid for sharing their knowledge, and to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussions!

We’ve been organizing more sessions like this at The Hague Tech, because access to the right knowledge and people can make a real difference when you’re building and growing a company. And on that note: we’re already working on another event focused on startup support. More soon!

🇪🇺 One month to go until EUtechfest! On October 27, TechFest returns to The Hague Tech for a full day dedicated to digital autonomy, sovereignty, and Europe’s digital future. We all depend on digital technology every day. For many (or most) European companies and organisations, much of that technology comes from outside Europe. At EUtechfest, we’ll look at what it takes to have more choice and control over the technology we use.

The programme is taking shape with hands-on workshops, Tech Talks, live demonstrations and meetups! You’ll be able to discover European alternatives, meet the people building them and learn what switching or reducing your dependencies could mean in practice. And you don’t need to be a tech expert to join. EUtechfest is also for founders, managers, entrepreneurs and professionals who make decisions about the digital tools their organisations use.

One month to go. If you haven’t yet, sign up now!

NEWS: The Hague Tech is getting its own GovTech Hub. During our OneGov Hackathons, organized together with Digicampus, we welcomed people from the Provincie Zuid-Holland, VNG, Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties, Belastingdienst, ICTU, Logius en RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment to The Hague Tech.

Having all these different GovTech parties under one roof made one thing clear: there is a need for a more permanent place where this community can meet, work and collaborate. That is what we’re now creating with the GovTech Hub.

Over the past years, The Hague Tech has grown into a busy tech hub with a growing community, full offices, and programs such as TechFest, CID Innovatiehuis, hackathons, and community events. We are now approaching maximum capacity for our offices. So, we’re adding another floor, with the fourth floor becoming home to the GovTech Hub. A dedicated environment for people and organizations working on technology for the public sector. We are developing the hub together with partners including the Municipality of The Hague and The Hague Tech member DigiCampus. At a time when digital autonomy is becoming increasingly important, so is the need for governments, technology companies, developers, researchers and educational institutions to work more closely together. The GovTech Hub will provide a physical place in The Hague to do exactly that.

The plans include:
• Offices for key GovTech organizations
• Dev.Desks for developers working on technology for a smarter government
• Partner spaces for investors, public officials, policymakers, students and corporates
• A showroom exploring Dutch GovTech history, its successes and failures, and the opportunities ahead.
• A community connecting startups, scaleups, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, governments, corporates, incubation and acceleration programs, and expertise from people including Nitesh Bharosa, the world’s first Professor of GovTech and Innovation.

The GovTech Hub will open on the fourth floor of The Hague Tech in January. More soon!
