RSV GOLD project aims to get insight into the risk factors of RSV-related mortality and ultimately to reduce the global burden of RSV infection.

We are very happy to announce that Annemijn van den Doel has joined the RSV GOLD study team. She is a first year medical student at Utrecht University with a background in BSc Biomedical Sciences. She has a special interest in immunology and infectious diseases, because there are still many gains to be made in this field in terms of prevention and treatment.

"I've always felt very privileged with the country I was born in and the health care system that came with it. With the RSV GOLD project I think we can be of great value in improving the life expectancy of young children in third world countries suffering from a RSV infection. As a member of the RSV GOLD team you have a lot of freedom and you can use creativity to work up to this goal which makes me very excited about this project!"

Last week Natalie Mazur presented the RSV GOLD data on global RSV mortality in Amman, Jordan; Erbil and Baghdad, Iraq. RSV awareness among health care providers, patients, policymakers and the general public was discussed as a key step in implementation of RSV prevention.

Since the beginning of September, Jolijn van der Geest has joined the RSV GOLD III – ICU Network Study team. She is a medical student at Utrecht University with a background in Biomedical Sciences. Early during her studies, she took a special interest in immunology and infectious diseases.

“When I learned about the RSV Gold III – ICU Network Study, I immediately resonated with the research goal. I think it is very important to know which children are at risk for serious RSV infection, in order to bring healthcare to these children all over the world in an effective manner. I am honored to become part of this motivated, international team.”

From the 1st of July 2022 Lisa de Krosse has joined the RSV GOLD Study team. She is a fourth year medical student at the University of Utrecht and has worked the last several years at the Hematology departement of the University Medical Centre Utrecht as part of the Medical Student Team.

"I am very excited to start working for the RSV GOLD study and be a part of this enthusiastic and hardworking team where I, among other things, get the chance to improve my research skills.
Together we can make a difference in understanding the characteristics of children with a RSV infection and try to create a better future for those children worldwide."

Our assistant-researcher and medical student Renate Visser visited the RSV GOLD III - ICU Network Study team in Nepal this last June and July. We are thankful to our collaborators from Kanti Children’s Hospital (KCH) and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for welcoming her. Renate has performed a study to investigate the burden of RSV in the catchment areas of KCH and TUTH, and she has helped to finalize the data of their first respiratory virus season. The Nepal study team has already included over 200 RSV positive patients in the study! We are thankful for our collaboration and we wish them luck on their second season.
