We have kicked off our collaboration with Noor Wentholt, Ricardo Cid, Tatiana Schreiner en Cristiana Mukas from Rompa Leather and Danielle Koenen from our Nera team.

It was an inspiring session where Noor’s ideas and Rompa’s technical expertise made their first encounter. Noor took some designs, pieces of leather and pantone color samples with her to make clear what she is looking for. We are exciting to see how Rompa Leather will turn these wishes into a new, biodegradable piece of leather!

It is a pilot for both designer and tannery:
▫️Noor knows exactly what she wants and needs in terms of colors and handle of the leather and of course sustainability;
▫️ Rompa Leather has taken up the challenge to manufacture the leather to Noor’s wishes and to make it biodegradable and compostable, using Zeology as a tanning agent.

This week we have kicked off an exciting new collaboration between Rompa Leather and Dutch bag and accessory designer Noor Wentholt.

Rompa Leather, already a partner of Zeology, will be setting up an R&D pilot with the guidance of Nera to manufacture Zeology Leather to meet Noor Wentholt’s wishes for her leather designs.

Our leather tanning agent Zeology consists of modified zeolites. But, what are zeolites?

Zeolites are aluminosilicates. In other words, a type of mineral made out of aluminium, silicon and oxygen.

The structure of these compounds is unique, and they are completely different to any other class of tanning chemical. A synthetic zeolite can be made to possess a completely unique structure that has not yet been discovered in nature. It also means that a unique synthetic zeolite structure showing great potential as a leather chemical, which cannot be sourced in nature, can be made in a factory in a highly renewable manner.

The building blocks of the zeolite are silica and alumina, which can be recycled in a circular manner to create future materials.

What is the difference between ‘biodegrading’ and ‘composting’?

The first difference is that composting provides the Earth with nutrients once the material has disintegrated into compost, also known as humus. Eventually the humus is then biodegraded by bacteria, and fungi into the base elements, CO2, and mineral nutrients for supporting the growth of biomass.

Humus also ensures that oxygen and water can easily move through the loose soil, reaching the roots and supporting plant growth.

A second difference is that in the testing protocols for composting it is included to perform an ecotoxicity analyses, whereas in a biodegradability this is not always obliged. So when an article is labelled compostable, it is also verified to be free of potentially toxic matters after breakdown.

We are excited to officially announce our latest collaboration. Last week, the new sustainable bag collection Rise of Rosa Zebble by Alpha96 has been launched. All the items in the collection are made with Zeology leather. Chrome free, aldehyde free and heavy metal free.

For both Nera and Alpha96, sustainability is of the utmost importance. In October 2023, Alpha96 achieved the B Corp certification.
