Like other European nations, Spain is making strides in its approach to sustainable packaging with new regulations coming into effect soon. Spainโs latest packaging legislation, set to be enforced by 2025, is a significant step in the countryโs commitment to reducing waste. The Royal Decree 1055/2022 on packaging and packaging waste outlines new rules for companies placing packaging on the Spanish market, requiring clear disposal instructions on all packaging. This includes details about whether the packaging is reusable, where it should be disposed of, and symbols that guide consumers in the deposit and return system. Starting January 1, 2025, all companies that manufacture, sell, or distribute packaging in Spain must also register with the MITECO Product Producers Register. This new requirement falls under extended producer responsibility and applies to packaging across various sectorsโdomestic, commercial, and industrial. Businesses must either set up their own compliance scheme or join a collective one, ensuring transparency through an annual Declaration of Packaging. For smaller businesses placing under 15 tonnes of packaging on the market, thereโs a simplified reporting process available.
