As water scarcity becomes a growing global challenge, more companies are forced to use lower-quality water sources for industrial processes and water reuse applications.
The reality is that many of these water sources contain traces of hydrocarbons from industrial activities, stormwater runoff, shipping, refineries, production facilities, or aging infrastructure.

The contamination is often invisible.
And that's exactly what makes it dangerous.
Many engineers assume that installing a 5-micron cartridge filter upstream of their UF or RO system provides sufficient protection. Unfortunately, oil contamination doesn't behave like solid particles.

Small oil droplets and emulsified hydrocarbons can easily pass through conventional particle filters and eventually reach the membrane surface.
The result:
- Membrane fouling
- Increased differential pressure
- More frequent CIP cleaning
- Reduced membrane life
- Higher operating costs
- Unplanned downtime

Once oil attaches itself to a membrane surface, restoring the original performance can be difficult and expensive.
A smarter approach is to remove the oil before it ever reaches the membranes.

This is where Oillockยฎ oil absorption elements come in.
Water flows through the element at a very high flux rate while hydrocarbons are selectively absorbed by a specialized polymer media. The oil reacts with the polymer and forms a solid gel inside the filter structure.
As more oil is captured, the differential pressure gradually increases until the element reaches its capacity and physically blocks the flow.

Unlike many separation technologies, a saturated Oillockยฎ element does not allow captured hydrocarbons to pass downstream. The flow simply stops, protecting the UF or RO membranes from contamination.

A relatively simple filtration step can prevent expensive membrane replacements, reduce chemical consumption, minimize downtime and extend the life of the entire water treatment system.
The question is not whether your feed water contains solids.

A pressure vessel compliant with EN 13445 and the PED (Pressure Equipment Directive) looks good on paper.

But what does that actually mean in practice?

EN 13445 is the European standard for the design, construction, and testing of pressure vessels.
It specifies how to substantiate aspects such as strength, material selection, welding, inspection, and testing.

PED provides the legal framework for this, focusing on safety and compliance. EN 13445 then provides the technical details for meeting those requirements. Other codes, such as ASME Section VIII, can also be applied to comply with PED. This is an important part of what we do, but certainly not the entire process.

โœ”๏ธ Everything is correct according to the standard
โ— But that doesnโ€™t automatically mean it works well in practice

Thatโ€™s where things often go wrong:

A design thatโ€™s difficult to install due to limited space
Maintenance that becomes unnecessarily complex
Excessive pressure drop due to poor sizing
Incorrect material selection for the process fluid or the environment

We make the difference by thinking along with you on these issues.

We design and build in accordance with EN 13445 and PED, but we see that as a starting point, not an endpoint.

Because complying with the standard is one thing; ensuring it works in practice is another.

In a lot of filter systems we come across, high flow elements from brands like Pall, Parker, 3M or Jonell are simply the standard choice, almost by default.

Completion fluids are critical to the productivity of oil and gas wells. As different types of completion fluids are used throughout the life of a well, each with its own characteristics, the filtration system must be flexible enough to handle this variability.
The filtration setup needs to manage relatively high levels of solids across a wide range of particles, while also supporting high flow rates and efficient throughput during operations.

Several filtration technologies are available for completion fluid filtration, including:
- Dual Vessel Cartridge Filter Units โ€“ Cartridge filtrationโ 
- Dual Vessel Bag / Cartridge Filter Unitsโ

That may sound odd coming from a filtration company, but in many real operating conditions, the smartest first step is not to catch particles in media, it is to separate them before they ever reach the filter.
A hydrocyclone separator is a good example of that principle.

In simple terms, a hydrocyclone uses fluid velocity and centrifugal force to continuously remove heavier particles from a flowing stream. No moving internals, no filter media to replace, and no frequent blockage issues that often come with conventional solids capture systems in dirty or variable service.

Why does that matter in practice?
Because in real operations, the challenge is rarely just โ€œremove solids.โ€
The real challenge is doing it reliably, with minimal interruption, stable pressure loss, and as little operator attention as possible.

That is where hydrocyclones can make a big difference:
Continuous particle removal from water streams
Also suitable for applications such as oil fry lines
Flow ranges from roughly 4 up to 1000 m3/hr
Available in carbon steel, SS316, and super duplex for more demanding duties
Manual or automatic purge valve configurations
Simple separation principle with low pressure drop and low risk of clogging

When selected correctly, efficiencies of around 90% at 50 micron for particles with a specific gravity of 2.6 are achievable.

The practical lesson is this:
if your process contains relatively dense solids, it often makes sense to remove as much of that load as possible with a hydrocyclone before using barrier filtration downstream.
That can help to:
Reduce filter consumption
Stabilize differential pressure
Lower maintenance frequency
Improve uptime
Protect downstream equipment (also self-cleaning filters)

Of course, a hydrocyclone is not magic. Performance depends heavily on particle density, particle size distribution, pressure, flow stability, and the overall process layout. But when the application fits, it is one of the simplest and most robust ways to take a solids burden out of a process stream.

In industrial filtration, simple usually wins.
