Protecting people and planet – from deep sea to space

Today marks a special day in KONGSBERG’s 214-year long history, as we embark on a new and exciting chapter as a more focused technology company serving the defence, security and surveillance markets.

Following the demerger and separate listing of Kongsberg Maritime, KONGSBERG is now dedicated to developing the technology and solutions required to protect people and critical infrastructure.

Our mission – to protect people and planet – has never been more appropriate and right. This is why we exist – and why I believe we are positioned to continue to grow.

A new chapter begins – with sharper focus and stronger direction.

"We need the full scope. Some people love the details; others see the bigger picture. The most important thing is the desire to continue developing."

Meet Alexander, Head of Hardware, Naval Systems at KONGSBERG. He leads the team responsible for developing and assembling the electronic foundation of KONGSBERG’s combat systems used on submarines, frigates and other vessels in the Royal Norwegian Navy.

“Our job is to understand the entire chain – from components, via module level and cabling, to the complete system."

Echo sounding that evolved with the oceans

In the 1960s and 1970s, the first echo sounding systems laid the groundwork for modern marine science.

A major breakthrough came more than 30 years ago with the introduction of the EK500. By introducing split-beam technology, it transformed quantitative fishery research and biomass estimation.

For the first time, scientists could measure and understand the underwater world with a new level of precision.

The EK story is one of continuous development, shaped by changing needs in marine research.

The story of EK scientific echo sounders begins more than half a century ago, when ocean researchers relied on rugged electro‑mechanical instruments that printed their findings on long rolls of paper. In the 1960s and 1970s, these early tools laid the foundation for what would become one of the mo...

From early curiosity to advanced underwater electronics

Amund’s interest in electronics began early, starting at the kitchen table in Feiring and developing from a hobby into a role in advanced underwater technology.

He now contributes to the continued development of HISAS, a high-resolution synthetic aperture sonar that produces detailed images of the seabed.

“The concept is that we take many images in sequence and stitch them together, as if we had a much larger sensor. The result is extremely clear underwater images,” he explains.

The technology is used for applications such as inspection of oil pipelines and deep-water search operations. Previous versions of HISAS have also been used to map shipwrecks in the Oslofjord and to search for dumped ammunition.

KONGSBERG has once again strengthened its position as one of Norway’s most reputable companies, according to a recent national survey.

“The improvement shows that our communication efforts and increased visibility are contributing to a stronger understanding of what KONGSBERG represents. It is encouraging to see that the Norwegian public increasingly recognises our role as a technology company delivering solutions for defence, security, maritime industry and society as a whole,” says Ivar Simensen, SVP Communication at KONGSBERG.

The survey measures how Norwegian companies are perceived and is based on a panel of more than 100,000 respondents across Norway. Companies are evaluated on factors such as quality, leadership, ethics, climate impact and innovation.

Results reflect a collective effort across the organisation and point to continued confidence in KONGSBERG’s role in society.

For Norwegian industry to develop, deliver and optimise complex products and services, strong production and operations management is essential. As demands for efficient and robust value chains grow, so does the need for leaders with operational insight.

As a concrete step to address this need, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, in collaboration with the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), has developed a new one-year study programme in production management.

With Daryl Powell at the forefront, the programme has gained a strong academic foundation.

"Our job is to take this further and tailor a study programme that meets the needs of industry. It’s not just about teaching theory, but about making theory useful. Real problems, real learnings, that’s the pedagogy," says Powell.

From drones to ballistic missiles – we defend every layer

A layered, integrated air defence system where components share critical information within milliseconds, the system recommending operator actions, and operators respond within seconds.

This is the essence of Full Spectrum Air Defence (FSAD). A comprehensive solution that brings together technology and capabilities to counter the full spectrum of aerial threats and protect people, infrastructure, society, and military forces.

FSAD is an ambition and a strategy being refined. It is not a distant vision. The technology already exists, and NASAMS forms its foundation.

Satellites are taking on a new role in defence capability.

Evolving from support functions, they are becoming central to operations – enabling surveillance, communication, and situational awareness.

This shift demands innovation, interoperability, and strong partnerships.
