It’s honestly quite surprising to see how many companies still hesitate to transition to more sustainable solutions especially given the clear direction of upcoming EU regulations.
From a quality and compliance perspective, waiting rarely pays off. Once new regulations are enforced, the cost of reacting through rushed implementation, operational disruptions, and potential non-compliance will almost certainly be higher than acting proactively today. Not to mention the broader cost to the environment when less sustainable chemicals continue to be used longer than necessary.
So the question is: what’s really holding companies back? In many cases, it seems less about lack of solutions and more about uncertainty, inertia, or concern around changing established processes. But with solutions now available that both improve Listeria control and support continuous production while also being biodegradable it becomes harder to justify waiting.
For quality managers, this presents an opportunity to lead rather than follow: to strengthen food safety, reduce long-term risk, and align operations with where the industry is clearly heading.
