Most retailers tries to solve a conversion problem, when what they really have is a behaviour problem.

We interviewed 870 customers, and it revealed something interesting.

Many store managers think they know why people don’t buy.

But our findings didn’t agree.

Here’s what stood out:

🔹 20.9% of customers with a purchase intention walked out because they weren’t offered any help.
🔹 5.2% got help, but it wasn’t good enough.
🔹 The reason behind people not buying, had more to do with staff behaviour than pricing or product availability.

This highlights a big retail gap:

Stores track sales outcomes, but they rarely track the behaviours that create them.

If you’re not measuring interactions, or coaching your staff daily, or collecting real customer feedback, you’re managing blind, and leaving revenue on the table.

That’s why more retailers are shifting from KPIs → KBIs (Key Behaviour Indicators) to get clarity on what truly drives conversion.

We did an experiment with one leading retailer.

They had a hunch that customers weren’t always being approached in-store, and they were right. With Maze, they measured it.
