Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimating that it causes around 21,000 deaths per year.

About 1 in 15 U.S. homes has radon levels above the EPA's recommended "safe" level of 4 pCi/L, but, as radon is odorless and colorless, it's impossible to detect without a radon monitor. Wildfire smoke doesn't stop at your front door.
When air quality outside drops, fine particles (particulate matter, or PM2.5) seep through gaps in windows, doors and ventilation systems. PM2.5 is 30 times smaller than a human hair, meaning it's small enough to bypass your nose and throat and reach deep into your lungs.

Wildfire smoke from the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley is affecting air quality across greater Los Angeles and beyond. Here are some tips to protect your indoor air and keep your family safe if smoke reaches your neighborhood.

South Coast Air Quality Management District - South Coast AQMD has issued an Air Quality Advisory in effect through at least Wednesday afternoon. Health officials are urging people near the fire area to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, avoid outdoor activities, and wear a well-fitted N95 mask if going outside. Unfortunately, wildfire "season" is here. If you live near a burn site, or indeed miles away: wildfire smoke can travel far - it's important to know that dangerous gases and toxins can seep into your home. Keep an eye on resources like the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and follow local news and community advice. One step you can take is to monitor your indoor air quality and know when to act, such as running an air purifier with a HEPA filter to help clean your air.

Most people have never thought about radon. But if you live in a home where the long-term radon average is consistently at or above 4 pCi/L, then this exposure is the equivalent of smoking nearly a pack of ci******es a day, or getting 200 chest X-rays a year, every year.

There is no "safe" level of radon, and with radon being the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, testing your home for radon is a good step towards a safer, healthier home.
