How are SIFs, SSIs and flexibility factors from ASME B31J actually applied in real piping stress models?

On 24 March, our CTO Nikola Jacimovic, PhD, Eur Ing, and ASME B31.3 Code Committee Member, will lead a live online workshop explaining the practical application of ASME B31J in piping flexibility analysis.

24 March 2026
14:00 to 16:00 CET
Live online workshop hosted by EngineeringTrainer

This session is intended for engineers involved in piping stress analysis and flexibility assessments according to ASME B31.3.

During the workshop you will learn how to:

• Understand B31J SIF and SSI formulations and flexibility factors
• Quantify the effect on sustained and displacement stresses
• Apply SIFs and SSIs at the correct model nodes
• Recognize common B31J modeling pitfalls in software
• Derive factors using shell and brick FEA models
• Interpret FEA results using the twice-elastic-slope concept

The workshop focuses on how B31J SIFs, SSIs and flexibility factors are implemented in piping stress models and how they influence flexibility and stress results in real piping systems.

One foot in the classroom. One in a hard hat.
That transition from student to professional can feel like a lot.

That’s why we’re heading to Karrieredagen 2026 at the Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge - USN, Campus Porsgrunn, to have real conversations, not just collect CVs.

Stop by our booth to talk about what we actually do, and join the mingling event we’re sponsoring.

Why stop by?

• Talk with StressMen and StressWomen who do the work every day
• Join the mingling, Marlene Stavrum will keep the mood light
• The StressLorean (yes, the car is real)

No pressure. Just good vibes and straight engineering talk.

Fifteen years. Infinite possibilities.

We've spent over a decade turning complex challenges into precise solutions; each project pushed us further, and each innovation opened new doors.

Here’s to the visionaries who trusted us, the team that makes it happen, and the future we’re designing together.

In this talk, Sondre Luca Helgesen, CEO of Stressman Engineering, sits down with Luuk Hennen, CEO of EngineeringTrainer , to address a critical topic: “Beware the Frankenstein Hybrid in Engineering!”

The concept of the “Frankenstein Hybrid” comes from the idea of assembling parts that were never meant to work together, like the fictional character created from mismatched pieces. In engineering, this metaphor warns about the risks of combining tools, systems, standards, or processes without a clear strategy, understanding or proper integration. What may appear intuitive for one engineer without deep knowledge of a engineering discipline can quickly become overly conservative, inefficient, costly, or flat out incorrect and dangerous.

Sondre emphasizes the importance of coherent design and understanding the lingo of the various engineering disciplines.

Back in 1955 (the year Piping Design found its voice), a paper quietly reshaped the way we understand piping systems.

A man named A. R. C. Markl published “Piping Flexibility Analysis”, setting, for the first time, clear rules for calculating stress and fatigue in piping components.

That milestone wasn’t a sudden leap; it was the culmination of years of experimental work dating back to the 1940s, when Markl and his colleagues at Tube Turns carried out pioneering fatigue tests on piping components. One of the early papers was co-authored with H. George from Kellogg; however, most of this foundational work originated from the Tube Turns team.

Their persistence gave birth to a framework that would later be incorporated into the ASA B31.1 1955 Code, guiding the industry for nearly six decades.

What’s fascinating is how humble Markl’s own words were:

“While the formulas and values given are based on the best available information, they are by no means to be taken as scientific fact... The prime purpose... is to provide standardized assumptions... and to stimulate further research.”

In other words, Markl didn’t just give us rules; he gave us a mindset: to never stop questioning, refining, and learning. At Stressman Engineering, we often reflect on this legacy and would like to further evolve the science. Today, with advanced simulation tools and decades of accumulated data, we can analyze in minutes what Markl could only approximate with ingenuity and experimentation. Yet the spirit remains the same, using every calculation to push understanding one step further.

Because good engineering isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about asking the right questions, just like Markl did 70 years ago.

At Stressman Engineering, we believe that knowledge grows when it’s shared. 💡

This week, our CTO Nikola Jacimovic led an internal EngineeringTrainer technical workshop on “ASME B31J and its Implications for Pipe Design.” It was a valuable opportunity to revisit how the latest methodologies in the standard influence stress intensification factors, flexibility factors, stress analysis, and the overall accuracy of our design models.

Beyond the technical insights, this session truly reflects one of our core values — continuous improvement. By learning, questioning, and refining the way we work, we strengthen our ability to deliver safer and more efficient engineering solutions.

A big thank you to the team for your engagement and curiosity — this mindset is what keeps us moving forward. 👏
