More new aerial photos in TopoSvalbard! https://toposvalbard.npolar.no

We've just added our latest pile of orthophotos, covering the northwestern part of Spitsbergen, as it looked like in the summer of 2024. Here represented by a piece of Jäderinvatnet.

You can compare with the photos from our 2008-2012 campaign, as these are still available as a layer in the map menu. Go see the changes! (Tip: Press 5 and 9 for easy switching between the two layers.)

🌊 Sea ice around Svalbard 🇳🇴 plays an important role in the Arctic environment, influencing marine ecosystems, surface temperatures, and the ocean-atmosphere exchange.

According to the latest Copernicus Climate Change Service bulletin, Arctic average sea ice extent ranked as fourth lowest on record for May 2026, with particularly low sea ice around Svalbard.

🛰️ This , acquired by Copernicus Sentinel-3 on 15 June 2026, shows the Svalbard archipelago, in Norway, shortly before the Arctic summer. Scarce sea ice remains visible around the archipelago, while turquoise plumes along the coast suggest sediment transported into fjords and surrounding waters by seasonal meltwater runoff.

Satellite data supports the monitoring of Arctic coastal environments, sea ice conditions, and seasonal changes in snow cover and sediment transport.

TopoSvalbard is now updated with 2024 imagery of Sveagruva in Svalbard. Further, the historical imagery from 2008-2012 has been added as a separate aerial layer, so that you can toggle the layers and compare now and then (currently Longyearbyen, Barentsburg and Sveagruva). And, the 1936/1938 aerial layer has been updated with detailed orthophotos of Longyearbyen.
