Ever looked into an abandoned mine and wondered what’s actually down there?

This is from the Cleveland Tin Project in Tasmania, where we used drone-based 3D LiDAR to map underground workings and understand the space.

Surface mapping was done with a conventional GPS- and LiDAR-equipped drone. Handheld LiDAR was used in accessible areas, while deeper inside the Scout 137 drone captured the rest, all combined into one continuous model.

Complete coverage, without sending people into the unknown.

What does an underground mine look like when access is limited?

At Cleveland Tin Projects in Tasmania, we used drone-based 3D LiDAR to map underground workings and capture a dense, navigable dataset.

In environments where access can be difficult or restricted, this approach helps reduce the need for manual entry while improving data quality and coverage.

Different tools serve different purposes.
Sometimes you get part of the picture.
Sometimes you can capture the full geometry.

ScoutDI’s tethered drone captured high-density 3D LiDAR data inside the Cleveland Tin Mine in Tasmania. In just a few flights, ~2 million m³ of underground workings were mapped safely, without human entry. A faster, safer path to geological insight and potential reopening.

Even at 2.25 MHz, our custom short-pulse dual-crystal probe preserves near-surface visibility and axial resolution, delivering high-confidence detection and measurement of internal pitting on rough and attenuative materials.

Yet another example of what use the 128-beam 3D Lidar can do,
not just as navigation sensor but as a data payload in its own right. This inspection, organized by our friends at Chironix, was at one of the more exotic sites so far.👌

At the Storfinnforsen hydropower plant, Kiwa used the Scout 137 system to document every square centimeter of massive dam surfaces for Uniper. No scaffolding, no rope teams, no months of set-up.

After switching in ScoutDI’s autonomy features (Auto Surface Scan, Auto Image Capture and Distance Lock), the same flight time delivered about 50 % more coverage, saving over 40 workdays compared to manual methods.

That’s workload cut in half while keeping data quality high and inspectors safe.

300,000+ geo-tagged images later, photogrammetry models and digital crack analysis were ready for engineering review. Consistent. Repeatable.
