Nepal's hydropower sector is entering a significant phase of growth, with increasing confidence from both private developers and financial institutions to invest in and develop large-scale hydropower projects. The recent advancement of projects such as Tila-1 Hydropower Project (440 MW) and Tila-2 Hydropower Project (420 MW) demonstrates the industry's growing technical and financial capacity to undertake projects exceeding 400 MW.

From a financial perspective, the willingness of developers and lending institutions to commit substantial capital to such large projects reflects increasing confidence in the long-term viability of Nepal's hydropower sector. These investments also indicate a transition from predominantly medium-scale developments towards larger projects capable of making a significant contribution to the national power system and future electricity export potential.

From a technical perspective, mega hydropower projects bring substantially higher levels of engineering complexity, system integration requirements, construction risks and long-term operational responsibilities. The scale of equipment, infrastructure, transmission systems and associated electromechanical works demands rigorous engineering, robust design practices, appropriate technology selection and stringent quality control throughout the project lifecycle.

With such significant financial investment and national responsibility associated with these mega projects, quality cannot be compromised. Cost optimization should not come at the expense of reliability, safety, performance or long-term maintainability. Decisions made during the design, procurement and construction stages will directly influence the project's operational performance and lifecycle cost for decades.

EMECH Consult Pvt. Ltd. congratulates the developers and financial institutions behind the Tila-1 and Tila-2 Hydropower Projects on achieving this significant milestone in Nepal's hydropower development journey

Introducing “EMECH MANTHAN”

At EMECH Consult Pvt. Ltd., we believe that engineering excellence is built through continuous learning, meaningful discussions and the free exchange of ideas. With this vision, we are proud to launch EMECH Manthan - our dedicated knowledge-sharing platform designed to cultivate technical excellence and professional growth. True to its name, EMECH Manthan provides a forum where our engineers present technical topics, share project experiences, discuss emerging technologies, analyze engineering challenges, and learn from one another. It is a platform to strengthen technical competence while building confidence in communication, critical thinking and leadership.

EMECH Manthan commenced its inaugural session with an insightful presentation by Mr. Gehendra Acharya of EMECH Consult Pvt. Ltd. on the topic, "Strategic Business Development Roadmap for EMECH Consult." The presentation covered EMECH's introduction and current business portfolio, an overview of Nepal's engineering consulting industry, international trends in engineering consultancy, EMECH's gap analysis, business development strategies, and the way forward for the company's sustainable growth.

We are also grateful to Mr. Sanjeev Pokhrel for his gracious presence as the session's critic. His constructive feedback, valuable insights and extensive experience in business development enriched the discussion and added significant value to the inaugural edition of EMECH Manthan.

EMECH Manthan is envisioned as a platform that promotes continuous learning, facilitates the exchange of technical and professional dialogue, and fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration among EMECH professionals while creating opportunities for meaningful engagement with industry experts, clients, academia and other stakeholders.

|| WHY SALIENT POLE MACHINES HANDLE UNDER EXCITATION BETTER THAN CYLINDRICAL ROTOR MACHINES ? ||

One of the most interesting observations in synchronous machine operation is that salient pole machines can operate much deeper in the under-excited region compared to cylindrical rotor machines.

This difference is visible in generator capability curves, operating practices, and stability studies - but the real reason lies in the electromagnetic behavior created by rotor geometry itself.

At a basic level, both machines perform the same task: converting mechanical energy into electrical energy while maintaining synchronism with the grid. Yet their construction leads to very different responses when excitation is reduced.

Cylindrical rotor machines, typically used in turbo-generators, have a smooth rotor and nearly uniform air gap. This design is ideal for very high-speed operation and provides excellent mechanical strength. However, electrically, the machine depends strongly on field excitation to maintain synchronizing torque.

When excitation decreases, the machine begins absorbing more reactive power from the system. As this continues, synchronizing capability weakens, rotor angle stability margins reduce, and heating in the stator end regions becomes more severe. Since the cylindrical rotor structure does not inherently contribute much additional synchronizing support, the machine reaches its under-excitation limit relatively quickly.

Salient pole machines behave differently.

Because of their projecting poles and non-uniform air gap, they naturally create an additional electromagnetic effect that improves synchronizing capability. Even when excitation is reduced, the machine can still maintain stronger stability characteristics compared to a cylindrical rotor machine operating under similar conditions

This is one of the key reasons why hydro-generators - which are predominantly salient pole machines - usually have a much wider under-excited operating region than turbo-generators.

Another important aspect is thermal performance.

Under severe under-excitation, flux distribution inside the machine changes significantly. In cylindrical rotor machines, this can produce concentrated heating effects in rotor and stator end regions. Since turbo-generators already operate at very high rotational speeds and high power densities, these thermal stresses become a serious limiting factor.

Salient pole machines generally operate at lower speeds with different magnetic flux distribution characteristics, making them less vulnerable to these extreme end-region heating effects during under-excited operation.

What makes this topic fascinating is that it highlights how machine geometry directly influences power system behavior.

Rotor shape is not just a mechanical design decision.

It affects: synchronizing torque

steady-state stability
reactive power capability
thermal performance
operating limits of the generator
