Every 15th of Poush according to the Bikram Sambat calendar Tamu Losar is celebrated in Nepal and all over the world by the Gurung(Tamu) community. According to the English Calendar, Tamu Losar falls on the month of Dec/Jan. This is a big festival of the Gurung (Tamu) community and they celebrate this festival in their own traditional way.
Gurung (Tamu) divides time into cycles of 12 years (lohokor) and interesting thing is that each year is given a different name, which is called Barga (lho). 12 different animals which are called “lho” represent each year. For example Garuda, Serpent, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, Deer, Mouse, Cow, Tiger and Cat. So every Tamu Losar is a farewell to the existing “lho” and welcomes to the new “lho”.
