🧗Working at Heights Refresher – Aniwhenua

The team recently completed a Working at Heights refresher course, tailored specifically to the Aniwhenua site.

Training covered a range of practical rescue scenarios including ascending and descending rescues using a rescue system, self-rescue situations, and techniques using only rope and limited equipment. The team also practiced abseiling and setting up restraint systems.

It was a great opportunity to refresh skills, build confidence, and ensure everyone is prepared to work safely at height. Check out the photos below from the training.

Behind the scenes at Speedys Road Hydro Station ⚡

A recent transformer refurbishment project at our Speedys Road Hydro Power station has helped improve the long-term reliability of the asset and return it safely to service.

Routine dissolved gas analysis (DGA) testing had identified issues with the transformer oil, prompting a detailed inspection. Local contractors from Te Kūiti and Hamilton worked together to remove the 8-tonne transformer from site, complete an internal inspection, and carry out repairs.

During the inspection, burnt connections were discovered on the internal earth switch, which was removed as part of the refurbishment. The team also identified significant corrosion in the transformer oil bund, leading to the installation of a newly fabricated steel bund by Pitcorn Engineering.

The transformer has now been returned to site and recommissioned, with ongoing oil monitoring planned to confirm the issue has been fully resolved.

A big thank you to everyone involved for the teamwork, problem-solving, and commitment to maintaining safe and reliable operations.

The two-yearly funding opportunity is open to not-for-profit organisations and community groups in the communities surrounding our Jericho Wind Farm Project.

The fund will support projects and initiatives that create a positive local impact across health, education, sport, volunteering services, and sustainability.

It’s part of Pioneer Energy’s commitment to supporting the communities where we operate, with similar funding opportunities being rolled out around our other sites and energy assets.

Keeping critical energy infrastructure running at Dunedin Energy Centre 🔧

A major refurbishment project has recently been completed on the wood fuel supply auger system on the roof at the Dunedin Energy Centre.

Stretching nearly 24 metres across the roof and made up of nine sections, the auger is a critical piece of plant which conveys woodchip fuel into each of the eight boiler feed hoppers. Without the auger, the boilers would run out of fuel and steam supplies to customers, including the Dunedin Hospital and the University of Otago, would be interrupted.

With the existing system reaching end of life, new augers and a motor gearbox were manufactured, delivered to site, and carefully lifted into place by Hiab. Extensive planning and preparation went into the project, including coordination with the fuel supply team to ensure all hoppers were full to capacity to maximise the time available for completing the changeover.

Thanks to the teamwork and expertise of contractors, operators, manufacturers, and support crews, the replacement was completed smoothly and without issue.

Great work by everyone involved in helping keep this important renewable energy facility operating safely and reliably.

The fund supports local projects and initiatives that create a positive impact across health, education, sport, volunteer services and sustainability.

The Aniwhenua Community Fund is the first of several community funds Pioneer Energy is introducing across the regions where we operate, with similar opportunities planned for communities surrounding our other sites and energy assets.

Exploring innovative solutions in Germany

Senior Mechanical Engineer Aaron recently travelled to Germany to visit leading equipment manufacturers and inspect operating installations that could support future projects across our business.

The trip included visits to Muhr, specialists in screen cleaning systems, where Aaron toured their factory and viewed installations in Bavaria and Austria. He also visited the Heizomat factory near Nuremberg to observe wood chipper testing and learn more about the latest technology and capabilities.

These visits provide valuable insights as we continue to invest in reliable, efficient infrastructure and explore opportunities to improve our operations.
A great example of learning from global expertise and bringing that knowledge back to New Zealand.

Turning a pest into a resource

Check out the latest video from Wilding Free Mackenzie featuring Pioneer Energy, sharing how we give wilding pines a second life.

Wilding pines are one of New Zealand’s most significant invasive pests, impacting our landscapes, biodiversity, and waterways. At our Pukaki site, we process the harvested trees into wood chips before they are supplied to customers across the South Island, including food processing and manufacturing businesses.

It's a great example of how we can support environmental restoration while creating value from a resource that would otherwise go to waste.

Thanks to Wilding Free Mackenzie for highlighting the work being done to tackle this challenge and create positive outcomes for our communities and environment.

Tuna Heke Management at Aniwhenua 🐟

Supporting fish passage continues to be an important part of operations at our Aniwhenua hydro scheme, with several improvements completed during FY26 to help support both upstream and downstream tuna heke (i.e. freshwater eel) migrations.

Upstream, enhancements to the elver pass included installing a camera monitored migration system which utilises mussel ropes in a 125mm PVC drainpipe. The integrated camera provides 24/7 visibility of elver movement patterns.

Downstream migration, a new guide net is being added to the tuna siphon system to help improve the guiding of mature tuna into the catch chamber where they will be recovered and transferred downstream to below Matahina Dam by local Iwi so that the tuna can continue their migration journey to the ocean areas south of Tonga to spawn.

Another very successful initiative this year is to use very large hinaki nets in the headpond. The majority of the adult tuna have been caught in these nets.

For all the adult tuna trap and transfer activities, we have been well supported by staff from the Runanga at Ngāti Manawa in Murupara. With their support, 93 mature tuna have been successfully transferred downstream so far — the highest number recorded to date.
