Celebrating the Highlanders’ 2026 Season 🎉
A fantastic evening celebrating the people and performances that made the 2026 Highlanders season one to remember.

Last week, members of the Pioneer team attended the Highlanders 2026 John Jones Steel Awards on behalf of Pulse Energy, with James Flexman presenting the prestigious Pulse Energy MVP award.

Congratulations to Ethan de Groot, who took home both the Pulse Energy MVP and Highlander Man awards following an outstanding season on and off the field.

It was also great to see so many players recognised for their contribution throughout the year, including multiple-award winners Caleb Tangitau and Te Kamaka Howden, alongside emerging talent Lucas Casey and Mika Muliaina, and Angus Ta’avao, whose spirit, strength and leadership through a difficult year for him and his family inspired many across the club. Angus received the Southern Inspiration Award.

A big congratulations to all award recipients and the wider Highlanders team on the season. We’re proud to support an organisation that champions leadership, resilience, community, and development both on and off the field.

A closer look at Christchurch taking shape 🎥🌱

Our latest video update from the Ecogas Ōtautahi Christchurch Organics Processing Facility gives a behind-the-scenes look at the exciting progress happening across the site.

From the Reception Hall and MCC building through to the tank farm, it’s great to see the facility continuing to come to life.

Once operational in 2027, the site will process food and garden waste into renewable energy, biomass fuel, and fertify™ biofertiliser, helping support a more circular future for Canterbury.

Check out the latest progress below. 🚧

Bringing our team together

Recently, staff from across New Zealand came together for Pioneer Energy’s Information Day in Alexandra.

With team members travelling in from remote hydro schemes, wind farms, offices and sites around the country, the day was a great opportunity to connect, learn more about the business, and strengthen our value of “We Are One Team”.

The day included business updates, health and safety activities, leadership sessions, and a keynote presentation from Dr Ceri Evans, followed by an Amazing Race around Alexandra and a bit of friendly competition on the curling rink.

A big thank you to everyone involved in organising the event, and to all staff who made the trip. We were proud to support local businesses including Alexandra Bridge Club, Duo, Tree Range Farms and IceInline Alexandra.

It was a valuable opportunity to reconnect, share experiences, and continue building the relationships that help us work together across Aotearoa.

Pioneer Energy has lodged a resource consent application with the EPA for the proposed Jericho Wind Farm at Blackmount / Ō Tukaramea in Southland under the fast-track consenting process.

If approved, Jericho Wind Farm would generate enough renewable electricity to power more than 18,000 homes each year, helping support New Zealand’s growing energy needs and transition to a lower-carbon future.

The proposed project includes up to 8 wind turbines with a generation capacity of around 35MW, while allowing farming operations on Jericho Station to continue alongside the wind farm.

Jericho represents a significant long-term investment in regional renewable energy, local jobs, and Southland’s future resilience.

Wye Creek Access Changes

Pioneer Energy will be temporarily closing public access across the Wye Creek hydro dam and South Branch pipeline while we assess what improvements may be needed to support safe public use in the future.

Over recent years, visitor numbers in the area have increased significantly, with around 12,000 people now crossing these structures annually.

Please note:
• The DOC track from the carpark to the hydro dam remains open
• Access to the Lower Wye Creek basin and Remarkables Conservation Area also remains open
• The closure only applies to Pioneer-owned structures beyond the track junction, including the dam and pipeline walk toward the helipad and South Branch waterfall

Signage and gates will be in place to help direct visitors.

We understand this area is popular with locals and visitors alike, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while this work is undertaken alongside the Department of Conservation.

For safety reasons, please respect all signage and closures.

🏆 Recognised for innovation

We’re proud to share that Pioneer Energy Group has received a Nintex Excellence Award, recognising our innovative use of digital tools to improve how we work.

Our Process Improvement Specialist, Fran, recently presented at the Nintex Leaders Forum in Wellington, where organisations from across New Zealand came together to share ideas and explore the future of process automation and AI-enabled systems.

From improving compliance and site safety processes to developing mobile tools for on-the-ground teams, we’re focused on making our systems smarter, simpler and more effective.

It’s great to see this work recognised — and even better to be learning alongside others who are also driving continuous improvement.

⚡ A Day on the Teviot

Our team recently had the chance to get out of the office and experience part of our Teviot Hydro Scheme firsthand — and what a day it was.

From Roxburgh to Lake Onslow, we travelled through the Teviot Valley, visiting hydro stations along the river and even stopping in at the Horseshoe Bend Wind Farm to see the turbines up close.

It was a great reminder of how our renewable generation works in practice — with water flowing through multiple stations to produce electricity efficiently, alongside wind generation supporting the wider system.

Days like this give a real appreciation for the people and infrastructure behind the scenes, working every day to keep the lights on for our communities.

And yes… a stop at Jimmy’s Pies may have also been a highlight. 🥧

🌊 Aniwhenua Barrage Maintenance Underway

We’re keeping Aniwhenua Barrage in tip-top shape! 🔧

Maintenance has been underway on Radial Gate 1, led by Ashurst Engineering with support from our Pioneer site team. The work includes replacing side seals, inspecting bearings, servicing the hydraulic ram, and general maintenance – likely the first time this has happened since the late 1970s!

It’s all part of keeping our infrastructure safe, reliable, and ready for the future. Thanks to the team for their hard work! 👏
