🎉 Milestone Achieved at Karapiro Power Station! 🎉
On Thursday 19 June 2025, the final of three ‘generation unit penstock intake gates’ was safely and successfully installed at Mercury’s Karapiro Power Station, marking the completion of a complex four- and a half-year project!
Each gate—over 40 tonnes—was meticulously fabricated and precision-machined by our skilled team at Ashhurst Engineering & Construction (AEC) along with fabrication of the gate framework to the same very high tolerances. This final gate, like its predecessors, took nearly a year to complete before being transported to site by heavy haulage. Before installation can take place, the team had been hard at work on site working through the removal of the original embedded components and reinstatement of the gate framework in the lead up to the installation.
A huge shoutout to our PropellWorks sister company Contract Mechanical Services (CMS), who carried out 12 months of preparation work to ensure a seamless fit. Also, sincere thanks to Sparrow Construction Ltd for their outstanding civil works, and McLeod Cranes for their consistent lift support and professional excellence throughout the project.
The team has maintained an outstanding safety performance throughout this project, both in fabrication and on-site. Despite the significant risks of working at height, in confined spaces, and in challenging weather, we’ve adhered to strict safety protocols, ensuring a secure environment during high-risk lifts and other hazardous tasks. Safety has always been our top priority, as has our interface with Mercury’s site personnel to ensure compliance with Mercury site standards.
As we now move into commissioning alongside Mercury over the next month, before demobilisation, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the dedicated Mercury team who were the driving force behind this project’s success.
🙏 Special thanks to: John Kennedy, Bede Geoghegan, and Joselito Villena
Your leadership, collaboration, and commitment made all the difference — we truly valued working alongside you.
Great to have one of our PropellWorks Board Members – Dave Hoskin there on the day to support us and share in this milestone.
To Mercury – thank you again for the trust and opportunity. And to everyone who has played a part in this journey. Your support, collaboration, and dedication have made all the difference and AEC is incredibly grateful for everything we’ve accomplished together. Here’s to another successful collaboration! 💪🔧⚙️

We’ve been a bit slack with our updates of late and it’s not because things have been quiet – in fact quite the opposite.

In March of 2023, AEC was sold to CMSL Holdings, and we joined forces with 3 other companies to effectively become the CMSL Holdings Group.

Those other companies – all based in Mount Maunganui - are:
• CMS (Contract Mechanical Services)
• SCS (Structural Coatings Services)
• Bay Sandblasting Services

Two years later in April 2025 we are thrilled to announce the next step in our journey of growth and evolution – the official rebrand of our parent company CMSL Holdings to PropellWorks! A name that marks a new era for our group of companies. It signifies movement, progress, and the ongoing drive to create value, while also staying true to our core commitment of delivering outstanding asset construction and maintenance solutions. PropellWorks is the culmination of 2+ years of growth, collaboration, and dedication, drawing together the strengths of our four companies.
We’re incredibly excited about what this new chapter means for our team, our clients, and the communities we serve. With a refreshed brand, enhanced capabilities, and a renewed strategic direction, PropellWorks is more than just a name change – it’s a representation of our continued growth, the strength of our values, and our mission to support New Zealand’s essential infrastructure.

Look out for our new Logo’s as our branding rolls out over the next few months.
Check out our refreshed website www.aec1989.co.nz which also has links into the mothership – PropellWorks, and our other legend companies.

We are extremely proud of our team at AEC for achieving an outstanding milestone of reaching a Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) of zero. This accomplishment highlights our collective commitment to safety and the proactive measures taken by everyone involved to maintain a safe working environment. It is a testament to the dedication, awareness, and teamwork of our entire workforce, and we are excited to continue striving for excellence in safety standards across all our projects.

With that mind, we wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday break. Take care.

Happy to support our local community.

Hi everyone, recently our adjustable basketball hoop by the VVC was in need of some serious repair.
On behalf of PNCC and all of our community, can we say a huge thank you to Max, Leighton and Ashhurst Engineering & Construction for volunteering their time and expertise to fix the hoop. Thanks guys, it is much appreciated.
