A compressor should only be replaced without further A/C system inspection in one scenario: when a seized clutch bearing causes damage. Normally, when replacing a compressor, we also address any system leaks, as a compressor will function as long as it receives sufficient oil and refrigerant. A leaking system will eventually cause compressor failure. However, In this case, as Rodney, owner and technician at CoolCar, explains, the issue is not a leak but a seized clutch bearing—making compressor replacement necessary without additional repairs.

What a beauty! We are lucky to be able to work on such classics. This 1961 Cadillac DeVille is in the workshop with a broken A/C. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this caddy has graced our workshop, the first time we found the evaporator and TX valve leaking. Since then the discharge hoses have begun to leak, and the compressor has seized. so we've remade the hoses and fit new compressor. Given the age of the vehicle, our technicians take considerable care in diagnosing faults/leaks, as we recognise that these classics are more prone to damage and damage from wear and tear. 🔍
