🛢️ In the mid-late 1970s, the oil crisis hit New Zealand hard. Like many Kiwi businesses, we faced significant challenges as work opportunities dwindled. But in adversity, we found new paths.

🌏 With local prospects limited, members of our team ventured internationally. Notably, Laurie and Don headed to Egypt for geodetic survey control contracts, while Tony joined Harrison & Grierson in Fiji as an engineer for a Suva marina project.

🛠️ This period marked a time of resilience and adaptability for Woods. Facing tough circumstances, our team expanded their horizons, contributing to significant projects overseas.

Join us in looking back at this defining era in our history – a testament to our team's determination and versatility.

📺 1973: A Year of Milestones and Challenges for New Zealand and Woods.

As colour TV emerged and NZ's population hit 3 million, Woods underwent its own transformation. The company, still at 72 Grafton Road, evolved into 'Wood & Partners' with the addition of three new surveyors: John Locke, Graham Rice, and Laurie Edmond.

🔍 Laurie, a former Senior Land Transfer Surveyor, brought his extensive experience to the team. Bruce White's expertise, particularly in SW modelling and Water Supply networks, became a cornerstone for early projects like the Te Atatu North harbour modelling.

⚡️ Amidst these changes, New Zealand faced the global oil shock recession, a tumultuous time that drastically shifted economic landscapes. The crisis led to unprecedented measures like 'carless' days, reflecting the era's challenges.

🌟 Through it all, Woods navigated these changing times, laying the groundwork for the resilient and innovative company it is today.

Join us in reflecting on our history, a journey marked by adaptation and growth.

🕰️ In 1970, amidst the simpler life of New Zealand, two Kiwi brothers, Don and Tony Wood, founded Woods. Their first office was a modest pre-First World War cottage at 72 Grafton Road, Auckland.

📈 Starting in an era of black-and-white TVs and trolley buses, they tapped into the growing need for engineering and surveying in a developing city. Over 50 years later, from small beginnings to 8 Nugent Street, Woods has grown into a leader in urban development and community building.

🎉 Join us in celebrating over five decades of growth, driven by dedication and the Kiwi spirit.

Please help us celebrate Sam Smith, one of our Geospatial Leads, on his recent feature in the University of L'aquita journal - DISEGNARECON!

Last year, Sam was fortunate enough to assist with an emergency heritage capture of the Auckland Shot Company Tower that was pulled down after Cyclone Gabrielle.

"While it was not a perfect capture process given the circumstances, I was able to work with Renata Jadresin-Milic from Unitec and Regan Potangaroa from Massey University to achieve a successful outcome in what was a challenging and time critical process." - Sam

Well done, Sam, Renata, and Regan on your awesome achievement.

Woods proudly collaborated with Drury Property Group LP on designing the Vacuum Wastewater Pump Station for Hunua Views.

This unique design was co-ordinated amongst other consultants including electrical engineers, architects, acoustic engineers, and the proprietary systems supplier, Flovac.

Thanks to everyone's efforts, this pump station also won the Built Environment Award as part of the Designers Institute of New Zealand’s 2022 Best Design Awards
(Check it out >

Vacuum pumping systems are relatively new in New Zealand with only a small system set up in Kawakawa Bay and 3 Stations in Christchurch constructed following the earthquakes.

We worked along side Watercare as they incorporated this new technology into their network including assisting them to develop their new standards (DP-17).

Features of the Pump Station:
• A control room, vacuum pump room and dry well
• A vacuum and sewerage pumping system to cater for up to 1000 dwellings!
• Biofiltration Odour Bed for treatment of gases produced by the effluent.
• A 260m long rising main including a section under the bridge located to the east of the site.
