We usually talk about climate solutions in terms of high-tech refrigeration and HVAC, but sometimes a controlled environment is simply a warm towel and a safe office.

This week, six little kittens were found dumped at a nearby park, cold, wet, and shivering. One of our Auckland Service Technicians, Angus McLagan, stepped in immediately, rescuing five of them and bringing them back to the office to get warm and dry before heading to the SPCA Auckland Centres.

But the mission wasn't over! One little stray remained. Tammy Gillbee, Admin Assistant headed out after work with food and a lot of patience to try and coax the last one out. Some amazing local residents were able to secure the final kitten the next day, and Angus made sure they were reunited with their siblings.

Massive thanks to Angus, Tammy, and our kind neighbours for looking out for the smallest members of our community!

Big news from the McAlpine Hussmann family! Campbell Brown from our Tauranga branch will be off to Shanghai this September to represent New Zealand and our industry in the 2026 WorldSkills International Competition.

Campbell will be competing against the best young apprentices and professionals from over 60 skilled trades. It’s a massive stage and a well-deserved opportunity for a hardworking member of our team.

As 2025 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on a truly landmark year. Celebrating 90 years of McAlpine Hussmann has been a significant milestone, and we are incredibly grateful to our talented team, valued customers, and dedicated partners who made it possible.

We wish you a Merry Christmas filled with warmth, laughter, and well-deserved rest. While most of our team takes a break, we want to extend a special thank you to our technicians who remain on call 24/7 to support our clients through the festive season. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2026!

Yesterday evening we attended the final New Zealand Women in HVAC+R NZ event for 2025 - the annual awards ceremony. We enjoyed spending time with industry colleagues and are delighted to share that three of our team were recognised for their contributions to McAlpine Hussmann and the wider industry!

Rebecca Wu was the runner up for the Behind the Scenes Award, Samantha Martens won the Emerging Individual Award - Office Based and Lucy Keals won the Emerging Individual Award - Field Based. We are so proud of them!

Our Woman in HVAC+R nominees and finalists had numerous McAlpine Hussmann colleagues from across all departments attend the awards ceremony to support our leading women.
We are proud that the entire company is showcasing our commitment to fostering talent across the industry through nominating, attending and supporting the awards.

Thank you to the Women in HVAC+R NZ committee for making this event happen, as well as Active Refrigeration and Excel Refrigeration for their sponsorship and support of this important industry initiative.

We are proud to share the great news from the Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills National Finals held in Palmerston North over the weekend - our McAlpine Hussmann team achieved fantastic results!

Two of our participants took out the top two spots in the country, with Campbell Brown from Tauranga taking 1st place, and Cody Smith from Auckland taking 2nd place. Additionally, Cullen House (Wellington) came in at 4th place and Ben Sherman (Christchurch) 6th. To have four out of six total competitors in the finals is an achievement in itself!

All four had qualified by finishing 1st or 2nd in the Regional Champions, and these results are a testament to them and also the support, training and mentorship provided by their colleagues and managers across the company. What a start to the week! 👏👏👏👏

Today we showed our support for Daffodil Day, a cause that is very close to our hearts at McAlpine Hussmann. We've all been touched by cancer in some way, whether through colleagues, friends, or family. Today was a reminder of the importance of coming together to support those affected.

To mark the day, we sent a special bright yellow box to every branch. Inside, our teams found daffodil pins, valuable information on cancer screening and early detection, and some yellow-themed nibbles to share.

This is a small way for us to honour and remember those who have battled or are currently fighting cancer, while also raising awareness about prevention. We're grateful for everyone's support and participation.

Last month, we had the honour of hosting our 90th anniversary event at the beautiful Akarana Events Centre. We welcomed staff, ex-staff, customers, industry partners and special guests from Panasonic in Japan and Hussmann Oceania.

A highlight of the evening was a nostalgic fireside chat with three of our ex-staff, who shared stories and memories. We also took the opportunity to recognise incredible tenure and achievement by presenting our company awards.

To cap off the night, we were delighted to receive the CCS Award (Panasonic Cold Chain Solutions Divisional Award), presented by Katayama-san, the President of Cold Chain Solutions.

This event was a wonderful reminder of our shared journey and the exciting future ahead!

As part of our ongoing training, last month we held our Apprentice Week event for 2nd year apprentices. We had 17 apprentices from around the country gather at our manufacturing facility in Tauranga for three days to receive training, run through practical exercises and learn about excellent customer communications. The group were challenged, tested and received guidance and feedback from our experienced team members along the way. They completed the week with a deeper understanding of the responsibilities that fully qualified McAlpine Hussmann Service Technicians are in charge of. We are proud of all the attendees for their dedication, and grateful to our team as well as industry partners, Refspecs and Realcold NZ Ltd for making it a hugely successful event!

The old double-doored McAlpine fridge that we picked up in June from a member of the public has been tidied up and is now proudly on display in our Tauranga branch.
The house where the fridge had been kept was built in the early 1900s and sits within an old growth forest remnant (partially under a QE11 Open Space Covenant). The bush remnant, though privately owned, has been the focus of a community restoration project involving the landowners, many organisations and volunteers for over 25 years.
To acknowledge the receipt of this historical item, we donated to a worthy conservation organisation called Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre.

Pūkaha is at Mount Bruce, near Eketahuna and about an hour’s drive from Palmerston North. It is a very special place for the member of the public who instigated the fridge donation, and we were pleased to contribute to the incredible conservation work the organisation does.
