👀 They're welding together tunnel segments 70-metres beneath Auckland. Heat sealing tens of thousands of joins in the plastic liner that protects the Central Interceptor, New Zealand’s largest bored wastewater tunnel, from corrosion is a crucial job. Those seals will also keep the tunnel airtight and keep wastewater right where it should be – in the tunnel. The liner that the crew is working on has the job of protecting the tunnel from wastewater which is acidic and can corrode concrete. Now, back to the welding. For the past year, around 30 welders have been doing this delicate mahi along the 7.6-kilometre stretch of the tunnel that runs from Mt Roskill to Māngere pump station. Yesterday, the crew put down their welding gear for just a moment to receive certificates for their efforts on the southern section that will receive its first flush of wastewater before Christmas 🎄 Weld done to everyone! They’ve now put down the certificates, picked up the welding gear again and headed deep underground to heat seal the northern section. Once in service the Central Interceptor will stretch from Māngere to Pt Erin and help reduce wet weather overflows of stormwater and 💩 into the environment.

Some of the Watertight team have been underground for the last 8 months, doing an incredible job. Welding the gas barrier for the CI, well done to all of the guys, team work at it finest.

Central Interceptor Wastewater Tunnel: Leister’s Weldplast S2 and Fusion 2 were selected as the best plastic welding tools for this infrastructure project.

A couple of years ago Watertight did the basement’s of this building in the CBD.
Now it’s time to do the other 49 floors, Temporary Waterproofing, Decks and podium’s.
The main membrane used will be the legendary Sika Sarnafil.
