BPC’s General Manager Andrew Burgess joined NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Ashburton District Council, mana whenua, and the local community to break ground on the Second Ashburton Bridge project.

We’ve worked alongside our clients and designers during the Early Contractor Involvement stage to conduct detailed constructability reviews, refined staging to minimise disruption, and identified opportunities to simplify the design and reduce temporary works. Early procurement and early geotechnical investigations have helped lock in programme certainty and keep the project moving at pace. “It’s the kind of early thinking that sets the project up for success long before construction begins,” Andrew says.

Since late last year, our team from across BPC, Fletcher Construction, and Higgins has been on site completing early works and working with local sub-contractors to begin pre-fabricating essential bridge elements.

The project will deliver a new bridge across the Ashburton River Hakatere, safer intersections, a walking and cycling link, and a new 1.6km watermain to support future growth. It’s a significant investment in resilience for Canterbury and the wider South Island and BPC is proud to be helping to make it possible.

Congratulations to BPC Area Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality Manager Natalie Griffiths, selected as a finalist for the 2026 National Association of Women in Construction’s Health, Safety & Wellbeing Award.

Natalie provides strategic leadership across our Ground Engineering, Civil Construction, and Asset Hub teams, focussed on strengthening BPC’s safety culture, system reliability, and the capability of the people and organisations we work alongside. She’s won praise for her work on our subcontractor forum, which builds connection, clarity, and shared accountability across BPC’s supply chain. Because our subcontractors work across the construction sector, the improvement in safety performance was wide benefits.

Focussed on bringing people together and inspiring others to think differently about safety, Natalie leads interactive initiatives like our Back to Work Day to show that safety can be engaging, practical, and even enjoyable.

Most people driving along Tī Rākau Drive would never guess what’s happening beneath their wheels.

Six metres underground, the Eastern Busway team are working in one of Auckland’s most complex construction environments, carefully navigating around a 220kV Transpower transmission cable that delivers power to much of the city and Northland.

This concrete-encased cable connects the Pakūranga and Penrose substations and cannot be disrupted. Working around it requires specially engineered controls, precise temporary works, and absolute care — protecting people, critical infrastructure and the everyday services Auckland relies on.

Within these tight constraints, large stormwater pipes and box culverts — up to two metres in diameter — are being installed between Mattson Road and Gossamer Drive, some as deep as six metres below ground. Once complete, they’ll strengthen resilience, reduce flood risk, and support the long-term performance of the busway corridor.

It’s complex, highly coordinated work that rarely gets seen — but it’s what makes the Eastern Busway more than a transport project.

It’s a smarter city, built from the ground up.

The Eastern Busway is delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM, and Jacobs, in partnership with mana whenua.

The official opening of the Te Rēinga Bridge over the Wairoa River in Hawke's Bay saw local communities celebrating their reconnection and the work BPC did in making it possible. The opening came four years after the original bridge was damaged in the 2022 floods and more extensively in Cyclone Gabrielle.

BPC delivered the 90.5m span bridge with the biggest lift undertaken in New Zealand and the first with Smith Crane’s Liebherr LR11000 crawler crane – 175t at 56m radius. The main bridge is supported by two 1200mm diameter piles at each end, with the land span supported by two 900mm diameter piles at the abutment.

The bridge’s single span design eliminates the need for a pier in the riverbed, minimising environmental disruption and preserving the mauri of the awa. The network arch was pre-fabricated in Hawke's Bay by Eastbridge Ltd, then assembled on site.

The project, delivered for QRS Ltd and ultimately for Wairoa District Council, was 100% Government funded.
