Healthy wetlands support native wildlife, improve water quality and play an important role in our landscapes.

This World Ecology Day, we’re celebrating our expert ecologists and the work they do to protect and enhance wetlands like these. Their knowledge, care and solution-focused approach help shape healthier ecosystems.

Our ecologists consider the whole ecosystem and how plants, wildlife, water and the surrounding land interact. They work alongside landowners and project teams to develop solutions that respond to each site and support lasting environmental outcomes.

Thank you to our ecology team and the clients who work with us, from concept to completion, to protect, restore and enhance places like these.

Teamwork took us beyond the office and onto the Hauraki Gulf this week. ⛵

A crew of Cato Bolam planners and surveyors joined director Michelle Bain aboard her keelboat for the opening race of Gulf Harbour Yacht Club’s Davenports Law Ladies Twilight Series.

Debbie and Kaaren trimmed the headsail, Rebecca the main, and everyone took a turn at the helm — with Debbie pictured reaching to the finish line.

A great breeze and teamwork delivered second on handicap, with Debbie also winning the spot prize!

A great midweek break for the team — and a sunset to match!

The September 2026 Survey + Spatial NZ Conference was a particularly memorable occasion for Cato Bolam.

We were delighted to see our Director, Michelle Bain, recognised with an inaugural Mark of Service Award, acknowledging her contribution to the surveying and spatial profession.

The award also marked the conclusion of Michelle's nine years on the Survey + Spatial NZ Board — reflecting her longstanding commitment to supporting the profession, its people and its future.

With six Cato Bolam team members attending the conference and technical workshops, it was a valuable opportunity to connect with industry colleagues and explore the latest developments shaping our work.

From artificial intelligence and emerging surveying technologies to regulatory change and economic trends, the conference provided plenty of insights to bring back to our teams and clients.

Congratulations to Michelle and all the other award recipients!

It’s great to see He Wāhi Rangimārie in Massey taking shape, with Stage 1 civil works expected to wrap up over the next couple of months.

The Caughey Preston Trust is developing He Wāhi Rangimārie, a place of peace, as a supportive housing community for wāhine whai ora (women seeking wellbeing). The completed development will provide 56 homes across a 4.2 ha site, with approximately 2 ha of native bush protected by covenant.

Guided by mana whenua and a design panel of women with lived experience, the papakāinga-based masterplan brings together tikanga Māori and trauma-informed design. Communal whare, gardens, a pā harakeke and māra hūpara play areas will sit alongside the homes, creating spaces for connection and wellbeing.

Cato Bolam has been involved from resource consent through civil design and is serving as Engineer to the Contract for the civil works.

Civil works for the first 24 homes are progressing well, including earthworks, retaining walls, a wastewater diversion, stormwater tanks and treatment systems, water supply and service trenches, all being delivered by March Cato Developments. House construction is the next step.

Cato Bolam is proud to contribute our expertise to help create a community that will become a place of healing for wāhine.

Thank you to the Caughey Preston Trust, March Cato Developments, PJM Project Management, Studio Tira, Resilio and our Cato Bolam team for the collaboration behind this milestone.

Recent changes to the development contributions regime introduce an additional consideration for developers using the Fast-track pathway.

For qualifying approvals from 19 September 2026, a territorial authority may adopt or amend a development contributions policy within six months after approval is granted. This means the final contribution liability may not be known at the time of approval.

In her latest update, Cato Bolam Planning Manager Kaaren Joubert explains where the new provisions may be particularly relevant and what developers should consider when assessing project feasibility, infrastructure requirements, staging and funding.

The key is to understand not only whether infrastructure can service a development, but how the cost of new, upgraded or accelerated infrastructure may ultimately be allocated.

Thinking about subdividing your rural Auckland property in the next five years? The subdivision pathways available today may not remain available under future planning rules.

The Government is progressing legislation to replace the Resource Management Act. Under the proposed system, Auckland would eventually prepare a new regional combined plan to replace the Auckland Unitary Plan. This could change the rules for rural subdivision, including opportunities linked to bush and wetland protection or native planting.

In our latest article, Myles Goodwin, Director and Rural Subdivision Expert at Cato Bolam, explores what these changes could mean for landowners and why now is the time to understand your options.

Find out what the proposed changes could mean for your land: https://catobolam.co.nz/news/considering-rural-subdivision-in-the-next-five-years

We’re pleased to share two consented subdivision projects in Coatesville and Dairy Flat. Each demonstrates how careful, site-responsive design can make the most of a property within the Countryside Living Zone.

Good subdivision design brings together access, environmental considerations and the landowners’ goals to create practical rural lots that work with the land.

These consents are a great outcome for our clients and the Cato Bolam rural subdivision team, who worked closely with each landowner to develop and progress their design.

Considering the potential of your Countryside Living Zone property? Book a free rural site assessment to explore what may be possible.
